In 2017, Beijing-based electronic producer thruoutin released his debut release on RAN MUSIC titled Contingent of Outlying Territory. The eight-track EP, filled with vibrant footwork beats, manipulated field recordings, and vintage synths, was a milestone for the artists as it was his first full release on an entirely Chinese run label. After the album’s release, thruoutin did several notable performances showcasing the new material, such as Zhangbei Festival, Wetware, and Boiler Room China. A featured artist EP, curated by RAN MUSIC, followed up the initial release and contained songs by J-Fever, Diva Li, and more. Two music videos were also put out for the track Exploring the Interior and Setting off into the New. The release has remained in its digital state since being put out on RAN MUSIC. A physical component for EP’s digital release was due to accompany it, but setbacks and delays hindered completion until now. Jingweir is enthusiastically proud to announce the reissue of Contingent of Outlying Territory in its intended form. Included in this iteration is both the original eight-track EP and its respected featured artist track. Not to mention new and never before heard narration of the album's fictitious travel log in English and Mandarin. All of which comes as a cassette and zine pack complete with a digital download request slip.

This deluxe reissue of Contingent of Outlying Territory will be available for purchase on March 6th, 2021. All tracks from the EP will be performed live by thruoutin with support by Kaize and graciously hosted by nugget records.

This release is about the exploration of new places, whether physical or within our minds. The tracks were written between January to October 2016. At this time I was finding new ways to approach writing songs; from a technical aspect, I was limiting myself to a single sound source for the material. After an idea had been established I would expand upon it with another sound source to build on the original foundation. In this same period, on a physical level, I had moved house twice as well as traveled to new cities in between. With each movement, I felt better about my surroundings and more comfortable with these journeys to new places. The album’s sounds narrate an expedition into uncharted territory. Each song is a chapter that takes the listener along on this mission.

thruoutin

American-born electronic producer and multi-instrumentalist, thruoutin, has been based in China since 2009. His work varies from project to project but often revolves around the combining of different genres with a focus on organic and digital sounds. He has extensively toured through North America, Europe, and Asia; releasing music on several labels along the way. Most recently he has put out work with Beijing labels RAN Music and Jingweir as well as performing on Boiler Room China and playing at festivals such as Wetware and Zhangbei. The musical works of thruoutin are best listened to on Bandcamp where there is a comprehensive collection of EP’s, splits, and albums. There are three recommended releases: Contingent of Outlying Territory (Ran Music), thruoutin & YTAMO split [JW020] (Jingweir), and 杏树台 Apricot Station (Senzu Collective).

Kaize has been a resident DJ at such clubs as White Rabbit, HAZE, and MODERNSKY LAB. He is a member of the ground-breaking electro house band Hielektromen as well as the founder of BE STUPID, a club night with roots in disco and Chicago house. His deep style gets the dance floor grooving. He is also a toy designer and runs the brand Kaize Toys.

Korean jazz pianist Sejin Bae has been active on Beijing’s jazz scene over the past three years. Her traditional style is heavily influenced by her experiences from New York where she was a graduate at Queens College and studied with many jazz piano greats, as well as played at various gigs and concerts.

Pierre Pradat is one of the most requested musicians established in China. He has played thousands of shows all over the country at the greatest venues for more than a decade after relocating from France, including many for some of the top Chinese pop stars and movie directors. He is a highly versatile and creative artist, cultivating a mainstream jazz piano style balancing elegant lyrism and virtuosic energy with a great sense of swing. He is also specialized in playing Rhodes electric piano and analog synthesizers, and is very open-minded on other genre like Funk and Electronica. His main influences to name a few are Kenny Barron, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett. He is also a very respected jazz educator, having taught to hundreds of Chinese students so far.

A young documentary filmmaker. Music is her soul food. She has become a jazz lover ever since the age of 12, when she saw a video of Esperanza Spalding performing in 2008. She is deeply influenced by jazz legends like Chet Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O’Day, Jacob Collier, Herbie Hancock etc. Also is keen on soul, funk and hip-hop music. She learns keyboard and guitar herself and has been practicing singing for years. She has gained over 100,000 followers in a Chinese Karaoke APP called Changba. In 2018, she was invited to perform at Tango Livehouse in Beijing Mars Music Festival. As a Jazz vocalist, she is active in different jam sessions and Jazz venues in Beijing. Her life experience and values highly agree with what jazz is, that is to pursue freedom up to the hilt yet within certain proper rules, to enjoy the pleasure of having creativity that only owns by human.

Michał Ciesielski is a composer, arranger and jazz pianist from Poland. He has composed almost 100 compositions, was awarded in several international music competitions and collaborated with many musicians as a pianist.
