First built during the Jin (晋) dynasty (265-420 AD), Tanzhe Temple's age is implied by the country saying: "First there was Tanzhe, and after there was Youzhou." (Youzhou is an old name for Beijing.) While it doesn't depart from the three-courtyard layout of a classic temple, the surrounding hills and forest are refreshing. Even today, monks come from all over Asia to study at Tanzhesi. Most visitors come to the Hall of Guanyin to see where the devout daughter of Kublai Khan prayed so adamantly that she wore indenta_tions into a rock. The majestic, ancient Emperor Tree still stands with incense placed at the base of its trunk. Don't miss the Stupa Park at the bottom of the hill that contains the graves of monks from the Liao and Jin dynasties.
Subway/bus: Take the subway to Pingguoyuan, change to bus 931. From Fuchengmen, Tourist Bus 7 (6303 5066) makes a three-stop journey to Jietai Si, Shihuadong Caves, and Tanzhe Si. The tour costs RMB 38.
Car: Take No 108 National Rd from Shijingshan. Because 108 National Rd can be a perilous stretch of road, we suggest hiring a driver for a stress-free journey.
Approx distance: 40km
