Furnished with Ming and Qing dynasty ornaments, this is the ultimate place to experience an authentic taste of Beijing that is increasingly only found in history books. From the first bite of mung bean pulp (麻豆腐madoufu), the flavor is right – this is Li family food. Try the home-style Beijing pancake (Beijing jiachang bing), baked perfectly according to the classic recipe – crispy on the outside, layered and chewy on the inside – as well as the flavorful flash-fried lamb with scallion (congbao yangrou葱爆羊肉). Another exquisite specialty is the silky stuffed eggplant (niang qiehe酿茄盒), minced pork sealed between slices of eggplant with egg batter, then coated in a delectable sauce with a beautiful hint of rice wine. The almond agar-pudding (杏仁豆腐xingren doufu) is light and refreshing; walnut custard (核桃酪hetao lao) is creamy and sweetly scented with jujube, while the chilled nailao (奶酪) – a yogurt-like imperial snack made with milk and rice wine – is delicate and utterly memorable. The environment of vermillion, carved wooden screens, and sculpted windows is regal yet understated; this restaurant is a rare gem that showcases Beijing culture and its wonderful cuisine.
