You may not expect a bar dedicated to Tiki drinks to be tucked away in the hutongs of Jiaodaokou but Bungalow is just that, and is one of the city's best bars to boot.
Owner Phil Tory is more than happy (and capable) to guide you through the bar's offerings and can whip a fitting, and potent, cocktail for any occasion.
With the expansion and addition of the "Iguana Room" in spring 2017, Bungalow began slowly securing its place as a one of Beijing's most formidable drinking spots. However, a sudden closure shortly after that expansion put those plans temporarily on hold.
The bar has, thankfully, since moved a few meters away from its old digs, which you can read more about here.
No event here now.
User reviews of The Tiki Bungalow & Cocktail Bar
Follow in the footsteps of 40-year old American David Hill, the original Beachcomber... leave behind your nagging wife and self-entitled children and head out on a search for love and debauchery in this tiki hut in the heart of the hutongs. If you're lucky, you might even find the legend himself – perched in his usual seat at the bar, knocking back exotic cocktails and fiery rums as he retells the stories of his unbridled youth spent pounding his way around the globe.
Drinks 6/5 (more than 2 dozen classic and modern tiki cocktails, or practically any other drink you can think to order)
Ambiance 6/5 (legendary grooves by Selecta Boo)
Value 6/5 (Happy hour every night makes it a damn dangerous spot to "grab a quick one")
Phil is a pro when it comes to cocktails. Not only the tiki cocktails are great. The classic selection is top notch as well. Loved the Pisco Sour. Phil also does consulation on cocktails. If you name 1-3 cocktails you like he easily suggest something which might suit you as well. I'm sure you gonna love it!
You can combine the visit with a tasty Chinese dinner at Nice Rice (Bei Mi Li) in Donsiertiao
Slow Boat Brewery Taproom is closeby as well and offers great burgers and craft beer. Phils cocktails are better though
Just adding my comment again that I already left here.
I visited the bungalow last night and was blown away! I'm not a cocktail lover - correction, I wasn't a cocktail lover - I thought they were just sweet juicy ways to hide the horrible flavour of alcohol. I got a real education last night! Phil, the bartender there, schooled me through about five classic cocktails (after which I was on my arse). But it was amazing the subtle flavours and complexity that man can get into a drink! Recommended; the Martinez, Volcano and the Zombie (though beware, it has like 100 shots of booze in it).
The place is quite small but it's got a relaxed hutong vibe, and it's a cool place to hang out. There's a nice little restaurant a few doors down which is good too.
Anyway, highly, highly recomended if you want REAL cocktails.
