Xuanwu District might seem a bit of a hike for eastsiders, but this weekly poolside buffet at the Doubletree by Hilton makes the trip well worth it. Every Sunday, the hotel’s rooftop garden terrace (adjacent to its sizeable, covered pool where you can swim to your heart’s content) is transformed into a serene retreat replete with a buffet and all-you-can-drink alcohol for a most agreeable RMB 158 per head (kids under the age of 2 get in free, otherwise it’s half price). Lounge chairs, tables, canopies and bean bags are scattered throughout the garden and guests are free to roam about as they nibble and munch on the sizeable selection of grilled goodies, including burgers, hot dogs, lamb chops and skewers, as well as a salad bar, fresh fruit, baked goods and desserts. Shower and changing facilities are also available, but be forewarned: though it’s possible to just turn up and plop down on any available spot on the lawn, larger parties are advised to reserve tables in advance.
