A wide, treeless, empty plain, with yurt villages scattered around its perimeter, the Kangxi Grasslands is a popular nearby place to enjoy equestrian pursuits (nags RMB 100, conqueror's steed RMB 200). Overnight visitors stay in tourist yurts built on solid concrete foundations that fit four people comfortably. The grasslands season is from May to September.
Bus: Catch bus 919 from Deshengmen past the Wall to Xibozi (西拨子). The 919 passes, but does not always stop at Xibozi, so it is important to tell the bus attendant your destination. Local cabbies will be waiting at the underpass to haggle with you for the fare to Kangxi (shouldn't be more than RMB 30 one way).
Taxi: Big-spenders can hop a cab straight out to the grasslands. The roundtrip fare from Xizhimen to Kangxi was quoted at anywhere from RMB 350 to 500 one-way, not including the RMB 30 Badaling Expressway fare.
Car: Take Badaling Expressway until it ends (where it turns into Jingzhuang Expressway), then turn west and follow the signs.
Approx distance: 85 km

Location

West of Badaling Great Wall. (Take tourist trains from Beijing North Railway Station or Beijing South Railway Station to Kangzhuang or take bus 919 from Deshengmen to Kangxi Grassland. Driving: take Badaling Expressway to the end, and then drive west and follow the signs.)
