This chain attracts a smart and hip, nightlife crowd and is a decent, affordable spot to sample Yunnan's distinctive cuisine. The menu offers two dishes which each include three different kinds of mushroom, as well as a twist on one of China’s mots popular dishes – Kungpao Mushroom (宫保蘑菇). The gongbao mogu is less sweet and more spicy than most Kungpao Chicken you’ll encounter in Beijing. Worms are another Yunnan specialty, and Middle 8th has an appetizer made of four types of the wriggly soil-dwellers. The piping hot “crossing-the-bridge” noodles (过桥米线) include about 20 different ingredients, but light on the stomach. A range of wines and sweet rice wine is also available and there is also a separate and slightly down-market barbecue section diagonally opposite the Sanlitun store. Voted “Best Yunnan” in the Beijinger’s 2011 Reader Restaurant Awards.

User reviews of Middle 8th Restaurant 中八楼
gone downhill
They used to have great food, innovative food, a nice location and then they just got too successful. New places, higher prices - which would all be ok - and just not as good food anymore as it used to be.
Some places seem to work very hard until they get a good brand name. And once they do, they cash in and just dont worry so much about continuing to provide the services that got them there in the first place.
Unfortunately Middle 8 is one of them. My previously favourite Beijing restaurant I unfortunately have to now recommend to avoid.

Good chinese
My experience have been mixed here. Some dishes have been good ,specially the fish -they have a head of the fish in the picture and few cold dishes. The soups go well with my chinese friends and we do end with a variety of noodles, which I like too.
Last 2 or 3 years I must have gone couple of times ,sometimes very good experience sometimes the food and sometimes the reverse when is bland as good as previous visit. But still my goto place for a change for chinese food, which is clean. The service guys are good.

The mushrooms
They do a mushroom dish that is to die for. I am no vegetarian I'll have you guys know, and I'm not even that into mushrooms but these mushrooms are amazing. They are breaded and then fried or something like that and it's really out of this world.
If anybody knows the name of the dish, will you please let me know.

Promising restaurant with disappointing food
Having spent Christmas eating our way round Yunnan we've been doing the rounds of Yuannanese cuisine in the capital. We visited the Sanlitun branch of Middle 8th for lunch. The place was pretty empty but we still had to wait 30 minutes for the first dish to appear, and another 10-15 minutes for each additional dish. Our friendly waitress informed us that they only had one person in the kitchen for Saturday lunch service.
Halfway through the food emerging in dribs and drabs we realised it wasn't really worth the wait - the flavours range from bland (all the carbs) to odd (the pork mince in watery tomato puree) to somewhat unpleasant (herbal salad).
The décor, service, menu and prices are all reasonable, but the food wouldn't bring us back any time soon.
