Popular with media types who sport black-framed glasses and CBD yuppies who work and reside in and around Baiziwan Lu, this jia chang joint serves up delicious homestyle favorites with a Sichuan flourish - the perfect food for those times when you're craving no-nonsense mi fan chao cai (rice and stir fry). The crowded entrance has a constant queue and the relatively extensive menu includes such common, yet exquisitely prepared dishes as sha guo (clay pot stews), hong shao daiyu (braised hairtail fish), muxu rou (mushu beef), hui guo rou (twice-cooked pork with chives, onions and red peppers) and their famous fluffy, white mantou (steamed buns). Prices are relatively steep (i.e. RMB 18 for an appetizer of of pai huang gua - "smashed cucumbers with garlic"), but the fast service, delicious food and hipster ambiance are well worth it. Pair a mid-day or evening meal here if you plan an afternoon at the adjacent Today Art Museum.
