About the concert:
The National Youth Choir of Great Britain’s first tour to China will showcase 400 years of British choral music and poetry.
The 100-voice ensemble will perform at Beijing Concert Hall (7 August). All performances will be conducted by NYCGB Director Ben Parry and NYCGB Deputy Artistic Director Greg Beardsell.
The touring program includes selections from the Tudor ‘Triumphs of Oriana’ and Gerald Finzi’s ‘Seven Poems of Robert Bridges’, Ralph Vaughan Williams’s ‘Three Shakespeare Songs’, Benjamin Britten’s ‘Hymn to Saint Cecilia’ and William Mathias’s ‘A May Magnificat’. The contemporary British choral tradition is represented by James MacMillan’s ‘The Gallant Weaver’ and a trio of recent commissions for the NYCGB New Music Program: ‘We Are the Music Makers’ (Roxanna Panufnik), ‘Alleluia’ (James Rose) and ‘who we are’ (Kerry Andrew). Completing the program are arrangements of traditional Chinese and Thao melodies, newly published by Hong Kong Baptist University Associate Professor John Winzenburg.
