16. Apr. Explore former red-light district in Beijing

Beijing49city --- The most cost-effective Hutong walk program provider for foreigners.

Just like Kabukicho in Tokyo, the Bada Hutong (Eight Hutongs Area) in Beijing was famous as red-light district. From Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) to China Republic Period (1912-1949), numerous brothels and restaurants were interspersed among the Hutongs in this area.

In fact, the “eight” is just a rough number; the Bada Hutong area includes dozens of Hutongs. Unlike the straight Hutongs in inner city, most Hutongs in southern Beijing are sideling and bending. We would like to explain the reason during this walk.

However, rarely known by people, the Bada Hutong was also birthplace of Beijing Opera.

Many legend actors and actresses used to live in area.

You can even find former residence of a dissolute premier of Qing Dynasty here.
