The Embassy of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to the People’s Republic of China has teamed up with the creative geniuses at Flow Creative to host the event “Soca Zumba” on February 25, 2017, at Flow Creative above CARAVAN Restaurant on Guanghua Lu.

The purpose of this unique event is to introduce Trinidad and Tobago’s soca music to the vibrant and dynamic Beijing fitness and healthy lifestyles scene.

Soca music, a genre created in Trinidad and Tobago, is instantly recognisable by its rhythmic melodies and unbridled energy. Having emerged in the 1970s through the fusion of the syncopated African rhythms of calypso music (another genre of music indigenous to Trinidad and Tobago) and East Indian beats, soca music has developed today into the heralding call and anthem of Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival.

Carnival is an annual celebration. This year, it will take place from February 27-28, 2017. Historically, calypso and soca have made their mark on the international scene with songs such as Arrow’s 1983 classic “Hot Hot Hot” played worldwide.

Today, the soca music industry in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean, is dominated by the offerings of the undisputed King of Soca, Machel Montano, and other Trinidad and Tobago soca artistes such as Destra Garcia, Kees Dieffenthaller, Patrice Roberts, amongst others.

At “Soca Zumba”, participants would be transported to the streets of Port of Spain (the capital of Trinidad and Tobago) as we dance to the beats of soca music, guided by our trusted Zumba instructor, Anastasia Lejeune, and Aaliyah Lewis, an up and coming dancer from Trinidad and Tobago, currently attached to the Beijing Academy of Dance.
