NAMGAR//
"Namgar Lhasaranova’s voice is as immense as her Siberian homeland.
The Buryat vocalist/instrumentalist fronts the group Namgar, which fuses traditional Buryat and Mongolian music of its region.
Buryatia, a republic of Russia — with elements of pop, jazz, folk, ambient soundscapes and art-rock that doesn’t sound quite like anything else. Lhasaranova’s impressive vocal range can go from playful and childlike to gigantic and soaring within the space of a few minutes.
The band uses traditional Mongolian instruments, including the yatag (a 13-stringed zither), the chanza (a three-stringed lute) and the morin khuur (a two-stringed bowed instrument), along with electric bass and drums to craft its unique sound, which it has been taking to festival stages around the world from Norway to Malaysia to the United States since forming in 2001.
Born in the Aga Region of South Central Siberia, Namgar Lkhasaranova, the
nimble, powerful vocalist first learned to sing on the steppe, herding animals. Her voice—nurtured by her native places, by later experimentation with jazz and rock and electro acoustics, and by the encouragement of elders from around the Mongol world—tells tales of tragic histories and passionate loves, of the exuberance of festive dances and the beautiful melancholy of wide-open grasslands.
Namgar started her musical career in the late 1980s by becoming a student of arts college in Ulan Ude, capital of her native Buryat Republic and singing in various ethnic pop collectives. Ten years later she moved to Moscow with her husband Eugene Zolotarev, who has been her music partner since the college years, and completed a course of studies at the department of jazz and pop vocals at the top Russian music college, Gnessin School.
RID//
Rid was established in 2014, when 5 members of the band met in Xilin Gol Grassland. “Rid”, the ancient Mongolian word, means “mysterious power”. Inspired by the grassland, Rid has mixed traditional Mongolian music with various modern music genres and created a unique style of music. Each song conveys the love and peace rooted in grassland , mountains, and rivers, showing the mysterious power of the nature.
Rid enjoys the happiness of playing music and appreciating the inclusiveness of music. Wherever in a noisy public place or cocooned in sofa, we can track back to the homeland of spirit through music, embracing the cultural heritage left by ancestors, and inheriting them in the way of creation.
