In Greek mythology, Icarus is caught up in the Labyrinth built up by his father and himself. With wings formulated by wax and feathers, Icarus neglects the warning from his father and flies out of the Labyrinth, so high that the sun’s heat melts the wings. In the end, Icarus falls into the sea where he is drowned to death. This story strongly strikes minds of 6 bands from Beijing.

These 6 local bands for years have been “caught up” in Gulou, the place where they live their lives and play their music. With ups and downs flowing bygone, Gulou to them becomes as the Labyrinth to Icarus. After thinking and fighting for long, now it’s finally time to fly out of the Labyrinth with wings of music.

So here comes NO GULOU, a sophisticated concept as well as a comprehensive showcase brought out by the 6 bands and performed on 10.7 from 6pm to midnight, with various genres from rock to rap, from classical to pop, from all they are wanted to all they can give.

NO GULOU is not a tragic theme of failure, but a courageous act of glory.

Let’s join thoese music groups on 7th Oct for a profoundly crazy party, and say YES to Gulou again when we are all out of the Labyrinth.

Showcase lineups (performing order as following)

1. Li Eryang & 1969

Bearing in mind the love of rock spirit, Li Eryang and his friends gather together and form a group called 1969, creating exquisite and pioneering music. Their performance is a reminder of the good old days and a revitalization of the good new times.

2. David the Rapper

Sometimes David is tender and tempting, sometimes he is destructive and invasive. His performance is a complex combination of vocal improvisations, stage shows and philosophical poetry, reflecting the outer cruelty and his inner charm. David the Rapper is never just the Rapper.

3. The Peppercorns

The Peppercorns is a band that plays heavy psychedelic rock music rooted in a classic 70's style, drawing inspiration from prog and art rock. The band is guitar heavy with experimental synth however their songs still maintain a pop sensibility. Fronted by Edog Wonderlogg II with Kangaroo Zhong on guitar, Brain 2.0 on drums, and Yan Von3000 on bass. Get ready for helicopters, paratroopers, and atomic lizards.

4. Macondø

Macondø make some of the most interesting and exciting music coming out of Beijing today: instrumental rock with elements of math-core, infused with vibes drawn from 70s psychedelic music, adding the production and sound of today’s electronic music. Their unique music shifts from sounds that are ambient and heavy, spacious and dense to atmospheric but rhythmically driven. Bombastic drumming, layered with lush floating guitar textures and earth-shaking energetic bass attack, and otherworldly synthesiser sounds.

Formed in 2014, the band quickly made a splash on the Beijing music scene, their live shows left audiences open-mouthed, describing it as ‘Volcano Rock’.

5. The Harridans

Don’t you dare blow The Harridans’ buzz cause they are soaring high on any of their lives. The Beijing based outfit headed by the glitzy larger-than-life Dan Taylor (a character out of a time capsule if I ever heard one) are a band infatuated with love it very self. It’s power, it’s pull, it’s dizzying effect – and the band expertly mines that very notion loudly and proudly with a psychedelic funk-driven prog rock sound that invokes everything from King Crimson to Alan Parsons. All the while thought a fabulous music group and a gorgeous front man exude a groove that’s dangerously alluring.

7. Su&The Paramecia

The finale performance will be from Su&The Paramecia, whose music is often described as indescribable. With the obsession of making a difference in music, they have been leading the audiences to an enjoyable and surprising journey with aesthetic composition, evocative rhythms and poetic lyrics. Their first studio album “Out of the Labyrinth” will be released on the same day of 7th Oct, signifying a magnificent breakthrough of the music industry.
