In this film, a middle-aged man just out of jail returns to his hometown after years away. He meets up with his childhood friend, his former girlfriend, his long estranged brother. He seems to be looking for something but ends up finding nothing. He is lost between the past and now and cannot see the future. All he is able to do is to be on the road, until a different kind of accidental fate beats him. Life is perhaps just like this. One is always on the road, accidental fates always awaiting, like a dream.

The plot of Sun Spots is minimal. It all comes down to a tragic love triangle. A tattooed young man lives without God, injunctions or aim in a quiet green corner of China. He does violent jobs for loan sharks - his machete is never out of reach. He falls in love with a pretty girl. She tries to forget her sorrow about the deceit of her former lover.

A couple of young people who spend a summer by the river have the illusion that life hasn't really started yet and that everything is still possible. In the sultry heat, Ali and Xiao Yu don't really behave like model citizens. They steal mopeds, extort money from children and become involved in pointless fights. And they are of course interested in girls; and they seem to have a preference for girls with a boyfriend...
About Director Yang Heng

YANG Heng (1975, China) graduated from the Hunan Broadcasting College in 1994, and went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in photography from the Beijing Film Academy in 2001. Since 2002, Yang has been working as an independent director and scriptwriter. With his feature film debut Betelnut he won the New Currents Award at the Pusan International Film Festival in 2006 and the FIPRESCI Prize at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2007. Sun Spots (2009), his second feature film, was selected for the Tiger Awards Competition in Rotterdam. Lake August is Yang's third feature. His latest feature Ghost in the Mountains is selected by Berlin International Film Festival in 2017.
