Dear members of our community,
Please join us on April 6th to talk about Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker’s “The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person's Guide to Writing in the 21st Century.”
You probably know Steven Pinker as the guy who, despite looking like he plays bass guitar in an 80’s glam rock band, writes massive books about the mind, language, evolutionary psychology, the global decline in violence, and human progress.
These wildly successful books are chock-full of good info, but an important part of their success has been that they’re very well-written. Steven Pinker can really write.
In "The Sense of Style" Pinker draws on linguistics and psychology to help us better understand what it is that makes good writing good and bad writing bad.
“[The Sense of Style] is more contemporary and comprehensive than “The Elements of Style,” illustrated with comic strips and cartoons and lots of examples of comically bad writing. [Pinker’s] voice is calm, reasonable, benign, and you can easily see why he’s one of Harvard’s most popular lecturers.”
