MORE ABOUT THE EVENT AND SPEAKER: What's Chinamaxxing? It's what a sudden flurry of drinking hot water, wearing hanfu outfits and practicing martial arts have in common -- if you're a Westerner living outside China. The Chinamaxxing trend has hit foreign headlines and social media; CNN called it a "Western fascination with Chinese culture and aesthetics". At our dinner, Chinese-American media figure Hung Huang will explain the how and why of Chinamaxxing, especially if you're in China. No one is better placed to talk about East-meets-West interaction than Huang. Her mother Zhang Hanzhi was a Chinese diplomat; her stepfather was the late Foreign Minister Qiao Guanhua. Huang was tapped at age 12 to travel to the US, where she lived with an American family to learn English and embed in American culture. She attended Vassar, and began a career in business just as China's post-Mao economic modernization took off. She became the publisher of a glossy Chinese fashion publication, and then began to blog. Her independent voice made Huang an influencer before the word even came into use. Today her candid and sometime irreverent comments attract many followers on various social media platforms.
