
Li Xiao Chuan
Li Xiaochuan is China's most recognized jazz trumpet player and composer. He is the only jazz artist awarded by CCTV (China Central Television) Music Channel, which is to honor the most distinguished woodwind & brass musicians in China. He was under double bass master Eddie Gomez’s tutorial. In May 2014, Li Xiaochuan released his debut album “New Age” and Eddie Gomez was featuring in it. According to this album, Li Xiaochuan won the Best Instrument Performance and Best Studio Album in the 1st JZ Awards. “New Age” represents the new sound of Chinese jazz trumpet world. This sound, which exerts subjective and aggressive in musical way, belongs to Li Xiaochuan himself.
Li Xiaochuan was born into a musically talented family and learned how to play the trumpet as a child. In 1997, Li Xiaochuan started his professional music career by joining in The band of Chinese Armed Police Force. In 2001, he was admitted to Shanghai Conservatory of Music and joined the jazz band “E-Groove” who performed in at the acclaimed JZ Festival in 2006 and 2007. Li Xiaochuan was the first Asian musician to receive the Richard Dalrymple Memorial Jazz Trumpet Scholarship and earned his Master degree in Jazz Studies from The University of North Texas in 2011. That same year, Li Xiaochuan was named as a finalist in the jazz division of the United States National Trumpet Competition. Bands that he has played in have been recognized with six awards by DownBeat Magazine including "Best Jazz Big Band" in 2009 and "Best Jazz Small Band" in 2011. Soon afterwards, Grammy Award-winning jazz bassist Eddie Gomez invited Li Xiaochuan to join his group for several dates in Asia. Li Xiaochuan has collaborated with other distinguished jazz musicians such as Billy Drummond, Uri Caine, Louis Nash, Seamus Blake, Stefan Karlsson, and Tito Puente Jr.
Li Xiaochuan's performance resume includes the JZ Festival Shanghai, Hong Kong Jazz World Jazz Festival, Luxembourg Echternach Festival, Denton Music & Arts Festival USA, Deep Ellum Jazz Festival USA, Switzerland Le Petit Globe and Geneva Aubes Festival, Japan Hitachi George House Jazz Music Weeks, Shenzhen OCT International Jazz Festival, Beijing Nine Gates Jazz Festival, and Frisco Jazz Festival etc. During JZ Festival 2014, Li Xiaochuan was a special guest performer on The Pat Metheny Unity Group's first ever concert in China. Li Xiaochuan's second jazz album “Initial”was release in December 2016.
