After reading thebeijinger's article on BananaFish, I was quite curious to find out what the restaurant would actually be like (food, decor, service, etc). I dragged my brother with me for dinner, after browsing the menu (not extensive) we ordered:
skewers:
1 asparagus (10 kuai)
1 eggplant (10 kuai)
1 onions (5 kuai)
2 chicken gizzards (2x5 kuai)
2 chicken hearts (2x5 kuai)
Chicken fillet Caesar salad (25 kuai)
Grilled Mackerel (18 kuai)
Grilled steak and bacon entree (48 kuai)
Sushi roll: name I think it was green dragon (38 kuai)
The manager came over to our table and told us that they didn't have the grilled steak and bacon, so we switched the order to lamb skewers (5x5 kuai). The first dish to arrive was the salad, it was decent although the chicken did not taste fresh to our palette (acceptable), but price wise light on the wallet. Then came the mackerel freshly grilled, it was tasty, the soy sauce particularly accentuated its flavor (loved it).
Then came the skewers.
The restaurant's overall concept, in grilling, is that they use hot sand and stick the skewers in the sand next to the fire to cook (quite interesting). But once the skewers got to our table, the temperature was simply warm. The chicken gizzards, chicken hearts, eggplant & onions (delish) were good, they had a sweet teriyaki sauce coated on top. Once I got to lamb skewers (passable) they were cold, somewhat disappointing. The server approached us to confirm that they had fulfilled our order and we pointed out to them that there was the sushi roll left. She came back again to tell us that they didn't have rice and so no sushi and asked us if we'd like anything else instead. We politely declined and after eating we paid.
Service: Good service, people are very attentive and nice at the restaurant. We didn't have to ask for water, they automatically came and poured us water as we sat down. Unless my taste buds are off, water was NOT from the tap (thumbs up).
Prices: They are fairly affordable. The best value for your money is the grilled fish. It was delicious and really cheap. Forgo let's seafood's fish platters (68-98 kuai w. soup and 1 or 2 sides) and just come here for good fish. The bill was nice, they gave us 30% discount as an inauguration promotion. So good prices.
Although I wasn't that impressed w. most of the dishes, I will definitely go back for the fish. Hopefully next time I'll get to try the sushi as well (if they have rice). But just to point out, they've only been open for a few days, so quirkiness and inconsistencies here and there are quite understandable. Give the rest. a try, it may surprise you. Rating wise, fish alone I'd give it 4 or 5 stars.
