Two of us had dinner at Ganges Indian restaurant yesterday. If you have never been to the Place it’s more interesting that one would think. The restaurant’s décor is similar to Sanlitun’s but with mirrors on the ceiling, wacky but fun chandeliers, and a very interesting golden wall with cutouts that look as if a statue of the Buddha should be in each.

They have a new menu that is worth mentioning. South Indian food is something I know little about but found it intriguing if not tasty. The onion pancake and donut shaped pastry that we ordered came with 4 or 5 saucers of different dipping sauces. The tastes were fascinating ranging from spicy coconut to fruit jams, yogurt, and a tomato based clear soup. Of the two curries that we ordered my favorite one was the spiced lamb but the chicken curry was also very good. I especially liked that the spice in the lamb curry wasn’t overwhelmingly hot. Perhaps one of the more interesting dishes was a large thin crepe like pancake that arrived at our table rolled like a tube. The waiter cut it in half and it was still too large to fit on the plate. It comes with a yellow potato cashew mix that we spooned on top and was quite delicious. We finished the meal with masala tea.

I eaten at Ganges quite a few times but this was the first time I’ve seen “Southern Indian” food on the menu. That said, I don’t recall all of the names. The other dishes that I would recommend are the chicken tandoori, the butter chicken, palak paneer and the onion or garlic naan.
