I submitted this listing after staying overnight at Great Wall Box Hostel over the Mid-Autumn Festival Holiday. It was a pleasurable experience, and I think I will go back there often to escape the noise and pollution of Beijing whenever possible.
Though it is housed in the ancient Gubeikou village in Miyun County, the facilities inside this renovated traditional Chinese courtyard home are surprisingly modern and would not be out of place even in the most luxurious of European hostels.
The beds there start at 80 yuan, but you can book a really lovely private room for considerably more.
Its location is probably the greatest aspect of the hostel though. It is conveniently located next to three of some of the lesser-traveled, ancient un-restored portions of the great wall. If playing Indiana Jones out in the wilderness next to a ruined section of the great wall sounds preferable to fighting hordes of tourists, then you should come here. It is near Simatai, which is a pretty well-known section, though it is closed at the moment. As for myself, I climbed Wohushan Great Wall (Crouching Tiger Mountain, even the name is cool) and I was nearly completely alone the whole time. The scenery out there was so absolutely gorgeous that it could be mistaken for a postcard. Picture rolling mountains, farmland and trains running in and out of tunnels. Classic Chinese scenery.
Also I should mention the fresh air and peace and quiet. You can actually hear crickets out there! Crickets! When was the last time you heard a cricket in Beijing?
And last but not least, the staff is very nice and helpful. The place is managed by a Chinese girl named Monica and she personally showed me where the bus stop was and waited with me until I left.
So do give this place your business. I have selfish reasons. I want it to continue to be successful so that I can continue to go there and enjoy it.
