Bubbly brunch on Sundays including the surcharge works out to be 560 something RMB a person including champagne and 430 something without alcohol.... Given these prices I wish that we had chosen Hatsune, Mosto, Sureno or some other high-end dining option.
The Bubbly brunch is all about shock-and-awe. Yup, there are lobsters and crab claws, scallops and oysters but they are not cooked well, seasoned or prepared in any way. Basically everything is just boiled to hell then thrown on piles of ice. They were all so dry, poorly cleaned with grey goop in their head cavities, half frozen and tasteless. I LOVE seafood and especially crab and lobster but I only ate one half lobster and a couple of crab legs before giving up and moving to other parts of the buffet.
Nothing was very memorable... the dry eggs, pancakes, bacon and other breakfast items were yuck. The teppanyaki steak station would have been nice, as the meat was tender and good but the guy had pre-fried about 3kg of steak and foie gras and left it just sitting there on a plate, seeping in blood and getting nice and bacteria-ridden. When you asked for one, he plopped in on your plate cold, unless asked to warm it up on the grill.
There was more Indian curry than anything else and it seemed that most other parties felt -as we did- that curry wasn't very appetizing at 11:30am with champagne so that whole section seemed to get ignored.
There were about 5 salads and the cheese platter was never topped up so by 1pm there was nothing left.
Good points: The dessert station was pretty spectacular, the sashimi was fresh and delicious and the very generous Moët champagne top-ups made the day worth it.
Honestly this place is good for families with lots of kids to make it worth the money. Kids run around and are well catered to, most parents get drunk while their brats disturb other diners and for those who want a nice decadent lunch, we are left wondering what all the hype is about. One 3-4 year-old was left alone for 10 minutes to pick up shaved ice from the ice bucket and ram it down the neck of the Moët bottle with his snotty little fingers which the server was then using to top up people's glasses. When we pointed this out to the server, she giggled.
I would never go back again, I used to go to the St Regis champagne brunch and remember it being better but then again, my friends who had been to the Westin in the past also said that the food used to be much better and the buffet much bigger so perhaps this was just a case of quality gone downhill. Whatever the reason, all 6 of us had really upset stomachs for 2 days after eating there and the general consensus was that this rip-off was all quantity and no quality.
P.S. I am not sure if this review should be for Zen5es restaurant in the Westin or not because the directory listing does not mention the Westin Bubbly Brunch.

Re: Quantity NOT Quality
Personally I think the food is much better at the Westin brunch on Financial street, though they didn't have Moet last time I was there... Was something called 'POP'...
Re: Quantity NOT Quality
oops, just found that the restaurant hosting the brunch is Seasonal Tastes not Zen5es. The reservation text message I got from them had Zen5es as their signature.
My review should have gone here:

Re: Quantity NOT Quality
I have to absolutely agree with this review
A group of us went a few weeks back and had exactly the same experience.
Firstly the place is overrun with kids ( admittedly they do have a separate 'kids club' area - it just needs to be electrified ) .I have nothing against them per se. I just dont particularly want to spend my Sundays mobbed by 100's of running , screaming ,demonically possessed children clutching balloons in the shape of giraffes.
Secondly the food is very average. As pointed out the seafood is either frozen or boiled to hell. The BBQ section is never made to order as they have piles of it that was pre cooked.
The only 2 things I liked was 1. there was Hummus and 2.the shake/juice bar was good.
For Sunday brunch I still think the Renaissance is Shuang Jing is a better bet.
Re: Quantity NOT Quality
I agree too, for novelty its great, but it is just 4 hours of pure gluttony. People stuffing their faces with food and drink, its pretty disgusting and ostentatious really. Definitely quantity over quality.
Re: Quantity NOT Quality
So Bottle Boy hates chinese as we learned in the past, does not like Thai food cooked by Chinese, hates places without fapiao and last but not least (so far) hates children and Chain Hotel Brunches. Is there anything he likes ?????
Re: Quantity NOT Quality
Update:
I forwarded the review to the Westin's F&B manager who told me that he is going to address the problems and would like to offer me a coffee to talk about it. The email was well thought out and polite, just as one should expect from a 5 Star hotel. I won't be giving them any more advice, I said everything I wanted to say in the review but it was a nice offer, I suppose. I do still regret spending more than 3000RMB at their hotel though.
However, I guess there could actually be some effort made towards improvement in the future.
Re: Quantity NOT Quality
As someone in the family set I'm tired of all the moaning about kids being around, and I'd like to offer up my experience:
My last experience at the Westin was appalling (not because of anything the Westin did -- the food and service were great), but specifically because of those customers WITHOUT kids. I was there with my quiet, well-behaved 5-year-old and some friends when a flamboyant, loudmouthed twentysomething guy drunk on champagne became loudly belligerent and started a fight with one of the waiter in full view of my frightened daughter. The man eventually needed to be escorted from the dining room (I was left to explain this to my daughter).
On our way out we saw the same guy in the taxi line and he vomited all over the ground, himself and his friends, once again in full view of my daughter.
Believe me, I'm really thinking twice about taking the kids to any champagne brunch again as it was both disturbing and revolting.

Frankly I think Westin coul DOUBLE its brunch business AND make both the family set and the single set happy by segmenting the market:
1. Create a Saturday Family-Friendly brunch with MORE kid friendly stuff, MORE games, live music oriented for kids (think The Wiggles, not Sultry Jazz), buffet stocked with kid favorites (play down the spicy dishes and raw fish and play up make-you-own pizzas, etc), set family pricing, and most importantly, promote it specifically as family friendly (stay away, singles! There will be KIDS there!!!)
2. Double-down on the champagne brunch for adults by removing all the family friendly elements from Sunday. Turn the kids room into a bloody mary bar or better yet, a Singles Bar for minglers. Have bachelor auctions. Invite pole dancers. Make it decadence central and don’t offer free entry for kids -- make it the same price as adults. Promote it as the ultimate in decadence, not suitable for kids!
A strong push with publicity in this direction would give them a HUGE advantage over their competitiors and may even double their business.
Plus, the people who would have had a poor experience (and then shout loudly about it) would stay away, as they will totally know what to expect upon arrival.
