Review of Mercante
This is the happening place right now in the hutongs as all of my friends keep talking about it. After all the hype, i decided it was time to check it out myself and see what the fuss was all about.
First, the good stuff:
- small and cozy restaurant that managed to use their surroundings to their advantage and make a concept out of the whole rustic thing. I like that!
- For a hutong restaurant, this was one of the cleanest ones I've seen
- For a hutong restaurant, they have a bathroom
- The meal didn't feel heavy at all despite it being a carb overload. When you've had to deal with over-greasy Chinese dishes for a few months, this alone is worth the price of admission.
The pannacotta was the BEST i've had
The not so good stuff:
- it's tasty but borderline plain, not to mention too expensive for what it is.
- Wines are overpriced but then again, no one forces anybody to order it.
dinner for 2 with a bottle of house red that included 1 appetiser, 1 Cheese plate, 2 pastas and 2 deserts turned out to be a little over 600 CNY.
What sums it up is what I did read elsewhere: I'm pleased but very unimpressed, especially looking at the cost associated with a meal for 2. Again, good stuff but i won't be back. Better value elsewhere.
