I have lived in China for four years now and two have been spent in Beijing. I recently had a hysterectomy at Peking Union Hospital and it was a very good experience with excellent facilities, extremely clean and hygienic and most importantly the most professional, experienced and caring doctors and nurses who all spoke English. The operation was planned and I had many tests beforehand which were very thorough and efficiently carried out. I met the surgeon twice before the operation and she was the kindest, most reassuring person. The ward I stayed on was part of the international section of the hospital. It was amazing. All rooms were private and I had an ensuite bathroom and a private attached kitchen/ dining room with fridge freezer and tv for visitors. There was a comfortable sofa bed in my room which my husband was encouraged to stay on for as many nights as we liked. Food could be brought in or ordered. The nursing care was amazing. All the nurses spoke English and at shift changes the new nurses or doctors arrived in a group to say say hello. All the doctors spoke excellent English and nothing was too much trouble for them. I stayed in for five nights and went back to the international emergency department the following week to have my staples removed, no waiting at all. I was really unsure whether or not to return to the UK for this operation, but China is now our "home" and I felt everything would be easier to just stay here. I'm glad I did! It was much easier and quicker to organise. I have medical insurance with Ping An and they were great. The hospital direct bills for all outpatient treatment and you need preauthorisation for inpatient treatment, so no paying upfront and sending off receipts for reimbursement. The cost of the operation and stay in hospital was RMB 80,000. If you are unsure about the quality or standards of healthcare here in Beijing, I would most certainly recommend the International Department of Peking Union.
