Review of Home Plate BBQ
1

Home Plate is terrible. I used to go quite regularly because the atmosphere and food are unique and not bad for Beijing. Unfortunately, the service is so, so frustrating. Bad service is to be expected China, but this place is on a whole new level of bad. Literally every time I went, something would go wrong. For example:

- A small group of us went for a friend’s birthday. We each ordered something, and someone ordered an appetizer for the whole table. Everything arrived except the appetizer. When asked about it, the server said that we hadn’t ordered it.

- A server once threw a dirty napkin into a basket of fried okra that I was still eating and tried to clear the table. She didn’t apologize, let alone offer another order or take it off my bill. She just said she thought I was done and asked if I still wanted it.

- My friend ordered a coffee with his meal, but it never arrived. He asked the server about it while we were eating and was asked to wait. After we had finished eating, we asked the server about it again. He says to wait again. A few minutes later, another server comes to tell us that the coffee machine was broken. Then of course they tried to charge us for the coffee.

There are more examples, both before and after the change in management. The worst part is that no one ever apologizes, which is such an easy and simple gesture that actually goes a long way in diffusing bad feelings. I understand mistakes and bad service happen, but in an establishment such as Home Plate that is charging Western prices and trying to create a Western atmosphere, they cannot be the norm. This place may seem like it will be an enjoyable place to eat and hang out, but odds are you’ll end up annoyed, and then angry, at their incompetence.

Home Plate, as Chael Sonnen once said to Anderson Silva, you absolutely suck!

The "lemonade" you should be making is to take these "lemons" listen to them, take notice, do something. Not shamelessly try to make a quick buck off the attention you have earned from this comment thread. Are you a Kardashian? Do you think any exposure is good exposure? It's not.

Sad. After one too many screw ups and a particulary inedible situation, my friend emailed with Adam a year ago about the horrendous state of affiars that is your delivery service and he swore he would fix things. Nothing has changed. The descritions on Sherpas are still wrong, you still haven't done anything about the packaging of your burgers. BS apologies acheive nothing.

Your service has been horrific from the beginning, but you always had a foreigner there to help the situation, these days the place is just a shambles. Stop being so damn lazy. I feel bad for the good people who have tried to make your place awesome, I feel bad for Seth who was the only reason you guys did so well to start with. I feel bad for Dave Bob who ran around every night trying to fix mistakes.

You had a captive audience, we were there every week, everyone I know was there every week, we all gave up. Peaceout.

I have to agree with BB, I was also a regular customer, but I took some people from out of town there (having raved about the food to them) and the lacklustre service made me think I wouldn't bother in future.

It's a shame that they've got one part of their product so right (much of the food) and another part so wrong (the service).

I said before I think they must think they have no direct competition, which they haven't, but many people will just hit up a good Mexican or Korean or Chinese restaurant eventually instead of this place.

Couldn't agree more, used to be a regular in the evenings. Last time I've been was with staff over lunch, service was so terrible that half my staff (Chinese) wanted to leave, never experienced anything like it, they're pretty chill people.

Almost forgot about the place actually even though I'm now a regular at Taco Bar just next door.

Ahem! Reading comprehension, Bill my friend. Tracy is our Drinks editor. Also, don't you mean to say "take your dick out of Home Plate's ass"? Usually I'm accused of being a tireless defender of the people who pay our salaries (shame on us, right? I mean if you can't bite the hand that feeds you, then whose hand can you bite?)

Speaking of customers, you all should come on down to our Pizza Festival on Oct 15-16 in Wangjing Soho.

Tix (RMB 20) are on sale here:

It's going to be awesome. Just think, you can sample pizzas from 30 different vendors all in one place!

LOL TYPICALL FOOD SERVICE IN CHINA .. MANY FOOD SERVICES LACK THE PROPER COURTESSY .. IN AMERICA WE ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE AND ATMPOSPHERE OF THE DINNER MORE THAN THE QUALITY OF THE FOOD ITSELF.. I WONDER IF HOMEPLATES IS UNDER WESTERN MANAGMENT ? ..
