It’s holiday time, it’s super hot, and what we need in Beijing right now is a little light relief. This week at Camera Stylo we’ve chosen some classic American cult comedies to bring a smile to these stifling summer nights. We’ll be screening more cult movies throughout the summer (and if you have any personal requests for screenings of your favourite movies, do let us know)!

哈啦夏令营 Wet Hot American Summer

(dir. David Wain, 2001)

美国|United States | 97 min

This is the newest movie on our list, as it only really became ‘cult’ a few years ago when somebody cottoned on to the hilarity that could result from Midnight Movie screenings. It’s the last day of a Jewish summer camp in 1981. There’s all the bad hair and terrible fashion choices you would expect, plus unresolved sexual tension, a localized threat of apocalypse and the world’s lamest car chase. A very very silly parody (starring many actors from The State) with clever jokes and memorable characters – this is a cult movie in the making.

年少轻狂 Dazed and Confused

(dir. Richard Linklater, 1993)

美国|United States | 102 min

Set in a high school in Texas in the 1970s, this cult teen comedy sees an influx of new freshmen students terrorized by the final year seniors in a series of hazing rituals. A bunch of memorable characters (some loveable and some deliciously hateable) navigate the educational battlefield. A homage to the director’s high school years, Dazed and Confused has plenty of affectionate memories of friendship, great music, romance and partying, but also exposes the stupidity of a culture which celebrates jocks and bullying.

上班一条虫 Office Space

(dir. Mike Judge, 1999)

美国|United States | 89 min

If you’ve ever worked in an office, this film is for you. Even if you haven’t, it’s still a brilliant satire of the modern workplace. When work is so bad that a missing stapler spawns murderous thoughts, it’s definitely time to find a new job… A group of computer programmers hate their boss and their Silicon-Valley-esque company; and gradually plot a rebellion. From the creator ofBeavis and Butthead, this film originally started out as a comic strip, but developed into a fully-fleshed live-action ensemble movie. Great stuff.

太空炮弹 Spaceballs

(dir. Mel Brooks, 1987)

美国|United States | 96 min

First in our ‘Sci-Fi’ cult comedy double bill, Spaceballs mercilessly parodies Star Wars and other big-budget Sci-Fi films. The ships are bigger, the helmets are huge, the bad guys are more inept and the uniforms are quite ridiculous. Using ‘the Schwarz’, a hero called Lone Starr must rescue Princess Vespa from the forces of evil – which are headed by Dark Helmet (a comically pint-sized version of Darth Vader). With typical screwball humour from Mel Brooks this film is an enjoyable romp through outer space!

洛基恐怖秀 The Rocky Horror Picture Show

(dir. Jim Sharman, 1975)

美国|United States | 100 min

It’s the late night double-feature picture show… What cult comedy week would be complete without an appearance from Rocky, Riff Raff, Dr. Scott, Columbia, Magenta, Brad and Janet Vice (sorry, I meant Weiss)? Not to mention the outrageously fabulous Dr. Frank N. Furter… This cult film needs little introduction. It’s a love-song to Sci-Fi B-Movies and all things imaginative and fun, with hit tunes by Richard O’Brien, a scantily-clad Tim Curry, tap-dancing, mad scientists and Meatloaf on a motorbike. So, come up to the lab and see what’s on the slab.

7月16日 星期六 晚8点 Saturday 16th July 8pm

疯狂店员 Clerks

(dir. Kevin Smith, 1994)

美国|United States | 92 min

We have screened this once before, but as with all cult movies, you can never see it enough. Clerks is a low-budget indie sensation. Working in retail can suck, but it can also yield some wonderful opportunities for comedy (re-enacting Jaws with a tortilla chip and a small bowl of salsa, for example). Kevin Smith made this film with very little money, in his then places of work – a convenience store and a video store. The deadpan performances, perfect comic timing and kooky characters all combine to make this one hell of comedy.

鬼玩人3:魔界英豪

Army of Darkness: Evil Dead 3

(dir. Sam Raimi, 1992)

美国|United States | 92 min

The third installment of the Evil Dead Trilogy is a parody of a parody, taking the ridiculous nature of Evil Dead II into another dimension – literally, as former discount-store worker Ash (Bruce Campbell) travels back in time for an adventure of epic proportions, battling undead skeletons to recover the magic book which can help him return to the future. Plenty of gore combined with hilarious dialogue, bad acting and a perfectly silly plot, this is pure comic entertainment. Even if you haven’t (for some reason) seen any of the Evil Dead films, you can still enjoy this shamelessly ridiculous adventure romp.

7月17日 星期日 晚8点 Sunday 17th July 8pm

谋杀绿脚趾 The Big Lebowski

(dir. Joel and Ethan Coen, 1998)

United States | 117 min

The Big Lebowski is possibly the definition of a cult movie. Not only do hard-core fans quote it, re-watch it, screen it, dress up like the characters and name themselves ‘Acheivers’ but The Big Lebowski is the only cult movie which has literally spawned its own cult – ‘The Church of the Latter-Day Dude’, which to date has over 200,000 followers. The film itself involves a man (The Dude) trying to live a peaceful life (just bowling and drinking White Russians) who is beset by confusion from all sides as he is caught up in a kidnapping and ransom plot involving a man with the same name. Crazy funny.
