Preserving Beijing’s hutongs is no easy task. Ancient structures crumble without proper care and old buildings are overcrowded with tenants. Yet, the hutongs remain an essential feature of Beijing’s unique culture. How can the hutong architecture be updated to meet current needs?
How do Beijing's architects view this challenge? CHP has invited four, Beijing-based architecture firms to address these questions. The speakers will share what happens behind the construction fences: how they work with historic materials, local communities, and new residents to create new spaces in the hutongs. Each architect will present a case study from their firm’s work in Beijing – sharing their insider perspectives on renovating Beijing's ancient architecture.
