The artist Pu Yingwei was actually born Pu Ying Tong but was renamed when he started school because his parents worried that his name sounded too close to the mandarin word for ordinary (普通 pǔtōng). Now the artist delights in images of the exotic, creating scenes from his studies in Europe and celebrating China’s minority cultures in photographs, paintings and the written word. This exhibition is part of a planned series on artists who have studied abroad.
