If the Brexit vote marked a low point in the European mission, the last 18 months have seen an upswing in confidence with increased economic growth, decade low unemployment and defeats of insurgent right-wing parties. At his 2017 State of the Union Address, President Juncker triumphantly stated “the wind was back in Europe’s sails” and spoke of his intention to drive further integration in areas of defence, finance and cybersecurity.
Against the backdrop of the Trump administration’s pursuit of an ‘America first policy’, commentators have noted the potential for closer cooperation between the EU and China. However, the relationship is not without its challenges as Europe's leaders have continually expressed concern over a lack of reciprocal market access and have spoken publicly on developing a bloc-wide trade defence mechanism.
To shed light on this complicated geopolitical situation, the European Chamber is delighted to welcome Erik Brattberg, director of the Europe Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Director Brattberg will lead a discussion on the current European political environment and the state of relations between the EU, US and China.
