The Nightlife Residency is an interdisciplinary project that is dedicated to the potential of experimenting with the definition of club-culture, particularly its transformative power with respect to ideas of community, identity, and creativity.

The NLR is a Beijing-based collective that looks at nightclubs as a soil for new artistic production and explores the symbiotic relationship between nightlife and contemporary art. Each year the NLR北京 invites an individual for a two-months residency, who as a producer or DJ extends what they do into the visual realm and/or a visual artist who takes inspiration from electronic music and nightclubs.

食品まつりa.k.afoodman
DJ/Trackmaker/Painter based in Yokohama, Japan. Takahide Higuchi, better known as 食品まつり(Shokuhin Matsuri) a.k.afoodman, creates music that defies categorisations – and is one of the few artists that actually fit this description. There are traces of almost every electronic music genre, from juke, footwork, ambient, house, techno, to noise, but those elements are dissected and morphed together then driven to extremes without giving you a second to come up with a definitive genre. Higuchi masterfully uses accidents and limitation as a catalyst to create the noisy technicolour of these sonic collages that has titillated, confused, and enchanted music obsessives far and wide.

After releasing his debut album from NY/OH experimental label Orange Milk, his music has been released by international labels including Diplo's Mad Decent and its offshoot Good Enuff. His recent albums (EzMinzoku, 2016 and ARU OTOKO NO DENSETSU, 2018) have been praised by the likes of Pitchfork (which listed EzMinzoku as one of "The 20 Best Experimental Albums of 2016"), FACT magazine ("The 20 best Bandcamp releases of 2016"), Tiny Mix Tapes ("2016: Favorite 50 Music Releases"), Resident Advisor, and so on. His ever-evolving and mutating musical vocabulary draws from every kind of music he stumbles across, from Chicago footwork to Okinawan folk music of his roots, ambient to J-pop, Talvin Singh's Indian classical music/drum 'n' bass fusion to classic videogame soundtracks, then twists them all with his playful psychedelia. This extends to his remixes and DJ mixes, including his monthly residency at NTS radio and i-D magazine's "i-DJ" guest mix, which was also picked up on Pitchfork's "10 Best DJ Mixes of March 2017" list.

This prolific and truly unusual catalogue of work has taken him on worldwide tours, and since making his international debut in mid-2016, he has appeared on Boiler Room, Low End Theory, and Unsound just to name a few, as well as headline shows across the US and Europe.

"He makes seriously fun weirdo music that we can't get enough of." - i-D
"in FOODMAN’s world, everyone is forever lost and forever thrilled about it" - FACT magazine
"It’ll hijack your spine and leave you wriggling on the floor, begging for more of that sweet, dangerous squeak" - Tiny Mix Tapes
“The worlds his tracks inhabit are not the dystopias of so much hybrid club music, but colourful spaces conceived in rainbow-like bursts of imagination.” – Resident Advisor

Howie Lee

“The composer at the forefront of China’s club scene” – Dazed

Clattering percussion. Skittering rhythms. Found sounds and field recordings. The sound of traditional China dragged kicking and screaming into the electric age. With his uniquely “Made in China” aesthetic, Howie is an electronic music visionary – creating a hybrid club sound rooted in the Middle Kingdom, but built for our densely interconnected globe. Howie’s debut EP was released via renowned UK tastemaker Trapdoor Records, followed by a 2015 full-length on Alpha Pup.

He played the first-ever Boiler Room recording in China (an event that smashed global streaming records), and has clocked appearances at SxSW, the UK’s Shambala Festival, and India’s Magnetic Fields. ‘White Plain’, off 2015’s MùChèShānChū, was featured on Apple’s ‘Shot on iPhone’ campaign. His 2017 ‘Homeless’ EP received critical acclaim from the likes of Fader, Vice, and Dazed, and his intricately produced re-work of Charli XCX’s ‘Boys’ (one of the songs of the year), topped streaming charts in China and was a viral pop confection. 2018’s ‘Natural Disaster’ EP is his latest release.

And music is just the beginning. As founder and label boss, the Do Hits collective he established in 2011 is now one of Asia’s most forward-thinking crews. As a curator, he’s overseen some of the country’s most exciting releases, with a string of successful EPs and LPs from label mates Jason Hou, Yllis, and Guzz. As a filmmaker, he’s produced several stunning abstract CGI works that carry subtle marks of his Chinese identity. Howie’s visceral, high-energy live shows are constantly evolving, and the latest version (built and refined over extensive touring) was debuted in 2017.
