June 26, 2010 The Beijinger held its 6th Annual Hot Pepper Eating Contest at Canada Day on Saturday, June 26, at the Canadian International School of Beijing. The five minute competition finished with Gabriel Monroe from the US consuming 64 hot peppers to take the Master of Spice title for the third time! Thank you to our sponsors for providing prizes to our ten contestants - Ganges Indian Restaurant, The Taj Pavilion, Purple Haze and Yin & Out Lijiang Theme Restaurant.

May 27, 2010 To celebrate the 60th anniversary of China & India diplomatic relations, launch India Briefing’s new “Doing Business in India” Guidebook, and introduce Dezan Shira & Associates Mumbai office team, China Briefing hosted a China-India investment seminar on bilateral trade and India investment matters, followed by a cocktail networking event including free flow wines, canapés, and traditional Indian dancing.

A sweaty crowd of well over 700 packed into Mako Live House last night to celebrate the best of Beijing’s Bar & Club scene at the Beijinger’s 7th Annual Reader Bar and Club Awards. Miss Laowai contestants took the stage to present the awards to the winners.
Dancers from Club Chocolate (which won the "Sexiest Staff" award), beats from the Syndicate, rhythms from the Afrokokoroots drum troupe and belly dancing from Pussycat Dance kept the evening lively between awards. The night was emceed by Cheeky Monkey Theatre’s Elyse Ribbons and Ian Ronalds from Chopshticks Comedy.
Guests enjoyed free Stella Artois, Hoegaarden and Lindermans beer from Vandergeeten, Frieixenet sparkling white wine and San Pellegrino and Acaua Panna water from ASC Fine Wines, cocktails from Becherovka, Grand Marnier and Spirit It, coffee from Capitano Coffee and finger food from Tommy Guns Burritos, Haru Teppanyaki and Sushi Bar and Texas Tamale Junkie, while nibbling on candies from Bonbon Bins. Goodie bags and prizes were also sponsored Eric Paris, Xinglong Karting Club, Oriental Taipan and China Odyssey Tours.
A total of 49 bars received accolades, with multiple winners Fubar (8 awards), Paddy O'Shea's (7), Xiu (6) and Q Bar (6) walking away with the most.

What's a rock festival without downpours and power cuts? Over four days (May 1-4) Midi returned to Beijing for the first time in two years and rocked Haidian Park. Here it all is in pictures - the smiles, the tears, the rain and the rock.

Tuesday, March 16 saw the best of Beijing’s culinary talent gather at Joy Luck for the Beijinger’s 7th Annual Reader Restaurant Awards, the capital’s oldest and most credible dining awards.
191 Beijing restaurants were nominated across 35 categories, and over 5,000 votes were collated to come up with this year’s results.
Hosted by the wonderful Dominic Johnson-Hill of Plastered 8 T-shirts and Beijing personality Ai Wan, the awards attracted a diverse crowd of revelers as they rolled on through the afternoon.
Entertainment was provided by the Hoochie Coochie Gentleman – Beijing’s Homegrown Blues Band.
Beer was provided by Stella Artois, wine by Montrose, cocktails by Grand Marnier, juice by iF Juice, cheese by Yellow Valley Cheese. Tony & Guy and Lily's Antique provided vouchers. Thanks to Joy Luck for providing the venue, finger food, soft drinks and support staff.

On March 11, Greening the Beige & Acupuncture Records teamed up to launch a new monthly fashion event: "Eco=Chic" featuring a different green-fashion theme each month.
Starting the series with "TRASHION" (trash + fashion), Acupuncture Records introduced their new 环包 (environmental protection) wallets, made by upcycling their old event flyers and posters. NLGX, the platform for the new Acupuncture Wallets + Recycled XL, introduced their design mission: "Preserve...Create," and Currie Lee, the designer/owner of DimSum of All Things Asian introduced her SLOW FASHION business model concept. Lee also contributed a portion of her March sales to Roots & Shoots - Jane Goodall Institute.
Erika Helms, Executive Director of R&S, gave a short presentation on the group's projects this year across China.

January 16, 2010 The second Film & Music on Snow, organized by The North Face, was held at Jundushan Ski Resort on Jan 16. The local rock bands including Alt Senior, The Ghost Spardac, Saving Molli, Bigger Band, Dragon Tongue Squad, and Brain Failure were invited to perform on the stage. The last and the best band, Tang Dynasty led the audiences into climax.

The American Ballet Theater (ABT) has its Asian premiere in the National Center for the Performing Arts this month. ABT’s ballet version of Cervantes’ classic Don Quixote is regarded as a classic on par with Mariinsky Theater’s Swan Lake. These images are from ABT’s rehearsal in the NCPA on Nov 13. After the Hilton's Food and Wine Experience on Saturday, November 14, the bold and the beautiful gathered in the Hilton’s Zeta Bar for the the Beijinger’s Fun Wine Auction, where the city’s brightest, hottest and most available were auctioned off for charity. Winning bids won a hot date, a bottle of fine wine, and a three-course meal at One East.
The event raised RMB 7,000 for the Ping An Medical Foster Home, a local charity that strives to helps Chinese orphans born with serious diseases or disabilities who require surgery in order to gain a chance in life

On Saturday, November 14 thousands streamed into the Beijing Hilton on the Third Ring Road to sample the hundreds of wines and other goods from around the globe on display. Everything from beer to coffee, cheese to chocolate was available for the crowd’s sampling pleasure.

We laughed, we danced, some of us fell off our chairs. The Beijinger 8th Anniversary Party went off with a bang last Thursday (October 22) in the capital’s most over-the-top nightspot, Chocolate. Guests were greeted at the Chocolate entrance by fire breathers and the small man on the door, while inside the cocktails flew from the bar and the Stella flowed freely. Then around 11 the fabulous Chocolate dancers strutted onto the stage and left us all reeling. The pictures say it all…

The chic international steakhouse Meat & Wine Co. Beijing celebrated the official opening of its first outlet in Asia. Guests of honor included the Ambassador of South Africa and a mix of corporate and local executives, alongside national press, media and celebrities sharing a mouthwatering feast complete with specialty drinks, great wines and beer. Drummers from Uganda greeted guests upon arrival and a South African band provided entertainment throughout the night.

In towns and cities around the world, the 13th annual search for the Stella Artois World Draught Master has begun. A record number of bartenders from more than 32 countries will compete in this year’s competition, striving to complete the time honoured Stella Artois 9-Step Pouring Ritual to perfection. The competition’s final will culminate in one of New York’s most iconic buildings on 5th Avenue: The New York Public Library.
The beijinger's Happy Hour this month saw the True Run crew kicking back with readers and other assorted friends in the modern-retro surrounds of Zeta Bar (love those cages in the toilets!). A selection of artsy cocktails were on offer to help everyone celebrate the release of September's issue, focusing on 30 years of Chinese contemporary art.

In addition to a flurry of food and drink specials there was a rousing MMA Xbox tournament won by two of our own staff members (we promise no foul play!) Ellies and Trip who took home hard-fought bottles of wine. Congrats guys!

Every party deserves a good theme, and every summer deserves a good soaking. Something over 700 people showed up at Club LA to get away from the summer heat. Charlie Flint won VIP tickets from thebeijinger blog for himself and his guests, as well as a bottle of VnC mixed cocktail. The Slip-'n-Slide drew a big crowd on the beach, and the SuperSoakers, outdoor shower bar and free tequila shots were pretty popular as well. The sponsors were VnC Cocktails, Club LA and Chivas.

Over 1,000 people attended the Canada Day Festivities at the Canadian International School organized by the Canada China Business Council Beijing Chapter featuring a BBQ,corporate exhibitions, a kids corner and the annual Chili Pepper Eating Contest sponsored by Immersion Guides. Beijinger Shi Lu won the contest by ingesting 42 peppers. She received a RMB 600 voucher from Cafe 31 for her heroic efforts. Second place went to Li Lun from Hunan, who ate 40 peppers and won a RMB 400 voucher to the In & Out Lijiang Theme Restaurant.
