Here's the explanation about 意见 (yìjiàn)  &  建议 (jiànyì) from last week!

We will take "意见(yìjiàn)" & "建议(jiànyì)" as an example to show how we use it to teach our students. 
Let’s take a look at "意见(yìjiàn)".

1. To know the meaning of each character and part of speech.
1) The original meaning of "意(yì)" is the thinking conveyed by words which is a noun, and then the extended meaning became "看法(kànfǎ)-opinion, 想法(xiǎngfǎ)-idea, thought"，such as "意(yì)" in "意见(yìjiàn)，意思(yìsi)".
2) The original meaning of "见" is to open the eyes which is a verd, and then the extended meaning became "看法(kànfǎ)，观点(guāndiǎn)-point of view", such as "见(jiàn)" in "意见(yìjiàn)" which is a noun. It can also act as a prep. And particle, but we will not talk about it today.

2. To form a word, to understand the meaning of the word and part of speech.
1) The part of speech of "意(yì)" which means "看法(kànfǎ), 想法(xiǎngfǎ)" is a noun. "见" which means "看法(kànfǎ)，观点(guāndiǎn)" is a noun as well. When "意(yì)" and "见(jiàn)" put together, it is still a noun.
2) The original meaning of "意见(yìjiàn)" is "看法(kànfǎ)，观点(guāndiǎn)" which is 'view, suggestion, opinion, idea' in English. The extended meaning is "因为彼此见解不同而产生的不满想法(yīnwèi bǐcǐ jiànjiě bùtóng ér chǎnshēngde bùmǎn xiǎngfǎ)" which is 'objection, differing opinion' in English. 

3. Original meaning: "请听一下我的意见。(Qǐng tīngyíxià wǒde yìjiàn.)" which is 'Listen to my opinion please.'
Extended meaning: "有意见你就直说！(Yǒu yìjiàn nǐ jiù zhíshuō.)" which is 'If you have any objection, be straight up about it.'

4. To memorize the structure and pronunciation of each character by making stories.
"意(yì)" is consisted of "音(yīn)" and "心(xīn)" which is to convey the original meaning. The simplified writing of "见(jiàn)" is hard to tell the meaning behind while it can be shown by "見(jiàn)" which is "目(mù)" combined with "人(rén)", and it shows the meaning that one person open one's eyes to see. When we memorize the word "意见(yìjiàn)"，we can tell them this way that "人用声音表达心里想说的话，用眼睛看对方是否接收到" which is 'People express themselves by words, while see whether they are understood.'

5. To make an interesting sentence with two confusing words.
我建议你听听他们的意见和建议。(Wǒ jiànyì nǐ tīngtīng tāmen de yìjiàn hé jiànyì.)
I suggest that you can listen to their advice and suggestion. 

6. Regarding "建议 jiànyì" we suggest you try this method by yourself and follow step 1, 2 and 3.

Did you have this experience that when you say a word which consists of two characters, you may reverse these two characters unintentionally?

Problems
When you memorize a Chinese word, it occurs that we reverse the order of two characters, which is caused because we do not master the meaning of each character. Then it came to two cases: the new word with other meaning or meaningless.
There are four interesting cases where the new word represents another meaning: 

1. Same tone and character: "蜂蜜 fēngmì" & "蜜蜂 mìfēng"
2. Same tone with different character: "搬家 bānjiā" & "加班 jiābān"
3. Different tones with same character:"了断 liǎoduàn" & "断了 duànle"
4. Different tones with different character: "星期 xīngqī" & "骑行 qíxíng"

Phonography & Ideographic
Firstly, it is known to all, most of the languages like English and French, are phonography. You can see that the writing form of that system is, to some extent, coherent with how it is pronounced, while Chinese is an ideographic system in which a sign or symbol that represents a particular idea or thing rather than a word.
To make it simple, let's take English as an example. When you write an English word 'ok', you can easily pronounce it, while Chinese is a different case. One Chinese word can be pronounced differently, for instance, "行" can be pronounced as 'xíng' and 'háng' as well. That is why, we need to learn the writing system and how to pronounce it. It is likely to be confused if you only know how to pronounce the word. That is the reason why I suggest you learn to recognize Chinese characters. 

Alphabet & Morpheme
Therefore, in English, a word which is consisted of meaningless alphabet can be a word with certain meaning when all alphabet put together, such as a, to, one, hand, etc. While, Chinese words are consisted of two or more morphemes, like "手机(shǒujī)". "手(shǒu)" means hand and "机(jī)" means machine. Sometimes a single morpheme can be a word such as "手(shǒu)" which means hand by itself.

Method to Memorize
We created a method and named it 'SIS' (Separate each word, Imagine each character, Make a sentence) to teach our students how to memorize confusable words. There are four steps to follow this method.
To know the meaning of each character and part of speech.
To form a word to understand the meaning of the word and part of speech.
To memorize the structure and pronunciation of each character by making stories.
To make an interesting sentence with two confusing words.
