The Tree House is a modest bar-cum-cafe that feels like a funky friend’s living room (and might be smaller). They offer decently priced drinks (large Yanjing RMB 10, spirits RMB 25), a compelling collection of DVDs and Chinese books (Illustrated Sexual History of China, anyone?), and double-skinned milk (a creamy Cantonese dessert). The gnarled centenarian jujube tree that grows adjacent to the bar – roots, branches and history indiscernible – justifies the House’s name magnificently. With the standard Wi-Fi, coffees and teas, Tree House has all the qualifications for a snug hutong hideaway. Events include photography exhibitions, braces day, language corners (both English and Chinese), film screenings and weekly jewelry-making (every Sunday at 3pm). It’s certainly not your best bet when rolling 20 deep, but it exudes charm and personality. Tree House is well-suited for an intimate chat.
