I visit Frost twice, three times a week, en route to Yoga Yard or the swimming pool. I come to eat, chat with Jeff. I usually chose salad and an entree. Today, we talk about the tofu burger. I’m no longer a vegan, I say. Oh, it’s still great though, he says. We talk about the smoked tofu and where he sources it from and how he prepares it. I ask how he achieves that amazing texture, I say again how good it always tastes. Today I want the Tofu Burger, I decide.

Jeff disappears into the kitchen singing “My Way” by Frank Sinatra, loudly. His wife is in the nail salon at the back of the premises. One of his sons is out front striking the air with marshal arts moves. The latest addition, in a tiger babygrow, is being energetically passed round the staff, thrown up in the air.

Its early evening and a man who sounds German is drinking beer at the bar, watching American Football playoffs on the TV, asking questions in English to the wait staff. Near the door, a French couple are in deep conversation in French, over cocktails and freshly prepared pizza, stopping to ask the waiter in Chinese to refill their glasses.

I am at the back, idly reading a book, looking up when the door opens, forkfulls of salad replenishing my appetite. Tofu Burger has arrived, four relishes, one of which I will use, land on the table too. The spicy one today, I think.

I am fond of licking plates, usually plates with something sweet. I order the Apple Crisp, with Caramel Ice Cream. I leave no trace.

Frost is a fun, easy, familiar place that is also a family place, family run. I go there to eat and chat and feel at home.

They have fantastic food at really great value. The BEST beverages. Always open. Lovely place. Lovely people.

See you there.
