Review of The Rug
4

Chaoyang branch:

I've been many times, brunch is really good, bagels and hash brown based plates are excellent, really nice decor, good for kids. They get 4 stars for that.

However, their pizza is just so bad I find it hard to believe it comes from the same kitchen. I don't understand how anyone can taste that and think it is ok to send.

There is little or no tomato sauce, the cheese seems low quality, but worst of all are the heaps of crushed garlic. So much garlic. All you can taste is raw garlic. You end up eating melted lego cheese on bread with raw garlic, it's so bad...

Please Rug, make a pizza with dough, tomato sauce and good cheese. Why all the garlic? I've never tasted such a thing anywhere in the world.

Last time I was there with a few people and someone made the mistake of ordering a pizza with an egg on it. The egg was pretty much raw. Bread, bad cheese, raw garlic and raw egg. Literally the worst pizza I have ever seen, and I've seen some seriously bad pizzas in China. There is such a disconect between the rest of the menu and the pizza sort it out!

With the raw egg I did talk to the manager and explain you will make people very sick with raw eggs, they must know that, how could they send it out the kitchen like that?

To be fair she did take it off the bill, which I did not ask for or deserve as our party had eaten over half of it(the bits without the egg), so thank you for that.

I'll look forward to my next visit for the normal bruch items which are great. For the love of god though, sort out your pizza.

edited title to sound less negative, it's a great place, try it!

Really? With all the garlic? Maybe lots of people actually like that, fair enough. Have you eaten pizza like that in other places or is it a unique Rug thing? Perhaps there is a whole branch of pizza evolution that has passed me by...

Everything else I've had in there has been excellent, their mussels are great, that sumo eggs benedict with pork is amazing as well. Maybe they do mean the pizza to be that way, just confuses me because everything else is so good.(to my taste)

Note to you, never eat:

  • Steak Tartare
  • Tamago kake gohan
  • Natto gohan
  • Coddled egg Caesar Salad
  • Egg nog
  • Aioli
  • Chocolate mousse
  • Tiramisu
  • Any "flip" cocktail
  • Pasta Carbonara
  • Hollandaise Sauce/Bernaise Sauce

Undercooked/raw eggs indeed...

Yea raw eggs are fine.

Hawthorn, I don't eat most of those items if I can help it, especially not in China. The sauces you mention are heated enough to kill salmonella.

Raw eggs can contain salmonella, which I guess kills thousands or more in China every year. In the US alone it is about 400 a year. Also they can contain bird flu but the risk is much lower than salmonella. Salmonella is a big problem in China's food production industry and every year there are numerous outbreaks leading to illness and death.

Every CDC in the world will advise that raw eggs have a risk and should not eaten raw. Anyone can choose what they want to eat, but raw eggs are not "fine" there is a risk of disease.

I have the right to choose if I eat raw eggs or not, I don't think restaurants should serve them to me unless I have specifically chosen a dish that normally contains them.

My point was more about the contrast between the Rug's other dishes, which exceed my expections, and the pizza, which was so underwhelming and slightly bizarre that I can't imagine how it came from the same kitchen. But some people like it so hurray for that. Maybe raw egg and garlic pizza will be the next big thing.

Actually I've had that pizza but it didn't have a raw egg on it. Are you sure it was raw egg?
