IKEA to Open Second Store in Beijing, Shoppers (and Sleepers) Rejoice

IKEA furniture names could be easily confused with obscure metal bands, but that hasn’t stopped Beijing shoppers from crowding into its Siyuanqiao store (and napping on its showroom displays).

Our fair city may currently boast the third largest IKEA store in the world (ranking just behind Cologne and Stockholm), but after just seven years, Beijing has already outgrown the 42,000 sqm Siyuanqiao space.

To meet the demand, IKEA is opening a second Beijing location on November 7. Located next to the A exit of Xihongmen station of Line 4 in Daxing in south Beijing, this second branch is a relatively rare move for the Swedish furniture giant, which seldom opens more than one store in a major metropolitan area.

Daxing may be a bit in the boonies for most readers, but at the very least, this second should help relieve the crowds in the Siyuanqiao branch and give people in the southern parts of the city a more accessible option.

That being said, if you always found catching a cab coming out of the Siyuanqiao branch to be a hassle, the new Xihongmen location may prove to be an even more convenient option considering it’s just 100-meters from the subway (that is if you’re not purchasing anything huge – or merely going for a catnap and hot dog).
