What’s Up in Beer: New Brews, Tap Takeover, Closing Party, and Non-Alcoholic Beer

The clock strikes 5 pm, you're getting restless in your chair and sick of working. "Only an hour to go" you say to yourself, as your colleagues yawn around you. You reach for some flavorless water, but what you really want is a beer. Let’s have a preview of your weekly beer events and news.

New Flavors at Slow Boat

Slow Boat has two new beers on tap, Ship Eyes Cherry Sour, which is brewed with lactobacillus, and is tart, and sweet with cherry flavor and a 3.7 percent ABV. The name refers to the tradition of carving mythological creatures at the bow of a ship. The second is Impeached Whale Saison which has 5.3 percent ABV. It's a crisp saison with a peachy punch thanks to the freshly juiced peaches, leaf basil, and organic Yunnan honey. And IPA lovers, Slow Boat’s IPA Week is coming back soon, stay tuned for more info next week.

Many Daughters Joins the Lineup at Great Leap

Great Leap Brewing  launches their newest beer, the Many Daughters Lager on Sep 13. Why the Many Daughters? Because it is brewed with pomegranate, which is a symbol of fertility and numerous progeny in Chinese culture. The many seeds of the pomegranate fruit represent many children, and locals always hang images of ripe pomegranates in homes to bless the family with numerous offspring. This effervescent lager has tartness and fruitiness on the nose, containing strong pomegranate flavor and crisp finish with 5.6 percent ABV. On tap on Sep 13 for RMB 35 at both locations.

Free Beer At Jing Jing End of Summer Party

Summertime doesn’t last forever, Jing-A and Jing Yaa Tang’s Jing Jing beer garden will bid the season goodbye this weekend at the Opposite House. The closing party will be on Saturday (Sep 15) and the first 50 to arrive can drink beer for free. There will be DJ, a couple rounds of complimentary Chinese bar bites passed around, and happy hour all night.

Shanghai Beer-vasion

Shanghai brewery Reberg, is taking over the taps at both Peiping Machine locations from today, Friday (Sep 14), and all 10 beers on tap are RMB 38 a pint. Each purchase will get you a stamp on the card, three stamps will get you an opener, stickers, and coaster; six stamps will get you a kerchief; and 10 stamps will get you three beers for free to consume within a week (Sep 14-21). You’ll also have a chance to meet the team behind Reberg at Fangjia location on Sep 14 at 8pm, or Gongti location on Sep 15 at 8pm.

Non-Alcoholic Beer and a New Brewbup in Shuangjing

Learn from their mistakes. That seems to be the message with NBeer's new non-alcoholic One Dog Beer with only 0.5 percent ABV. You may recall that one of their founders was caught drunk-driving a few years back, but don't worry, this zesty, flavorful beer is more than just a moral lesson.

Also there’s a new brewpub Xuan House opened in Shuangjing with some red complacent doodles on the white walls and brewing tanks, check my colleague Kyle’s review here.
