Events That Won't Leave You Hungover, Nov 19-24

We take a break after a fun-filled, and perhaps slightly askew, weekend, putting down our drinks to take a more productive look at the days ahead in Beijing. Here is our top pick of this week's Events That Won't Leave You Hungover...

Art Zeitgeist: A Journey in the Evolution of the Chinese Contemporary Art Scene
The latest Beijing Women's Network Monthly Spotlight Dinner will explore the fast-changing Chinese contemporary art scene over the past 20 years. The discussion will be headed by Nataline Colonnello, a sinologist, contemporary art specialist, and former director of Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, so attendees can look forward to insights from a true insider. This is a women-only event and is open to anyone who identifies as a woman. Gung Ho! Vegan Winsday
Saddened by the news that their Shuangjing store has shut, we thought it would be good to remind you of one of our favorite vegan deals in town: Gung Ho's Vegan "Winsday." Get 20 percent off of all plant-based products or dine for RMB 69 on their lunch buffet (which, confusingly they say is vegan but actually also includes animal products #fairwarning). 11.30am-2pm. Gung Ho! Sanlitun

BadBadNotGood
Hailing from Ontario, Canada, BadBadNotGood (read our recent interview with them here) are revered for their off-kilter rearrangements of hip-hop classics and devilishly bombastic originals, layering intricate jazz stylings and spry improvisation with krautrock elasticity, hip-hop rancor, and soulful conviction. Frequently collaborations with rap royalty like Kendrick Lamar, Earl Sweatshirt, and MF Doom doesn't hurt either. Join them on Thursday night and give your neck muscles a good stretch. RMB 260, RMB 220 (advance). 9pm. Tango

Friday, Nov 22

"Purposeful Wanderings": A Tourist Map of Pyongyang by Fuller
British artist Gareth J Fuller, better known by his pseudonym Fuller, returns to Beijing this Saturday two and a half years after he walked the entire length of the Sixth Ring Road, to unveil his newest work: Pyongyang. The result of two weeks exploring the North Korean capital's pristine, deserted streets, "accompanied by North Korean guides at all times," Fuller's reimagining of Pyongyang demonstrates the artist's intricate, creative "mind map" style, at once playful and geographically precise. Free. 2-6pm. Koryo Tours and Gallery

Sunday, Nov 24

Unveiling the Charm of Fan Art
For the Chinese literati, folding fans were once the ultimate symbol of elegance. Now rarely seen outside of the hottest Beijing summer days, the art of fan making has been largely forgotten, but it doesn't have to be: try your hand at making a folding fan of your own under the guidance of a seasoned fan maker this Sunday and learn what role these classic accessories played in ancient Chinese culture. RMB 138. 2-5pm. Zhengtong Chuangyi Center
