News From Golden Week: What Happened Over National Holiday

Beijing is a happening city! Don't miss a thing with our weekend roundup of the latest news.

While you were enjoying your week-long break, massive numbers of people flocked to the city’s parks (despite the rain), another war film topped domestic box offices, and China’s latest manned space mission readies for liftoff.

Beijing parks receive more than one million tourists: More than 1.02 million people visited Beijing’s numerous parks and historic sites over the holidays, according to the city’s parks authority. The most popular destinations included Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, Olympic Forest Park, and Beihai Park, all of which saw more than 100,000 visitors on the first four days of Golden Week.

Beijing’s railway stations packed with travelers on Oct 7: The city's railway stations saw a significant influx of incoming passengers – all of them probably heading back in time to make up those missing workdays – with Beijing, Beijing West, Beijing South, and Beijing Chaoyang Stations seeing nearly 95,000, 202,000, 186,000, and 59,000 incoming passengers, respectively.

Korean War film tops holiday box office: The biggest film over the holiday? The Battle at Lake Changjin. An epic about the Korean War – known as the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea here in China – topped the domestic box office all week long, raking in RMB 2.62 billion as of Wednesday, Oct 5. The movie, directed by Chen Kaige, Hark Tsui, and Dante Lam, tells the story of China's People’s Volunteers Army (PVA) and their unlikely victory over US and UN forces in frigid conditions at Lake Changjin, which changed the tide of the war.

Temperatures Drop at Week's End: From shorts and t-shirt weather to cool days and chilly nights, the weather in Beijing could be skipping from Fall to Winter faster than you can say "Ned Stark's your uncle". As of 6am on Oct 9, the city's Meteorological Observatory has forecast highs of 17 C and lows of 12 C, with temperatures forcast to be around 18 C during the day and drop to 7 C at night. Be sure to wrap up!
