Capital Caff: Get Lost (in Good Coffee) with Out There Coffee

Don't talk to me until I've read Capital Caff: Your guide to the latest in coffee happenings around Beijing.

A new coffee shop has popped up down by Jianwai SOHO, and they’ve got a few options that are pretty out there.

With a logo featuring an owl on a bright green background, it’s pretty easy to be drawn to Out There Coffee. And seeing as they promise “trendy innovative coffee, just for you”, they’re starting things off with big shoes to fill. The good thing is, they fill those shoes well.

First off, they’ve got three bean options to choose from – a Sidamo single origin espresso, an “affogato blend”, and sumiyaki, or charcoal roasted beans. I opted for the latter in an Americano (currently buy one get one for RMB 20 on Meituan) and was instantly impressed: it has a nice flavor reminisient of black sugar, but not to the point that it’s overpowering. An easy sipper to say the least.

As for the aforementioned affogato blend, it’s unclear on whether it’s meant to taste like an affogato style coffee or it’s a proper affogato – but this might be worth a future taste.

Turning to their other options, they’ve also got cold brew which they serve up in glass bottles with the owl logo and big lettering, which has become a wanghong hit if all the photos on Dianping are anything to go by.

Flavor wise, it’s pretty good as well, smooth with hints of floral sweetness shining through, making it good to cool off with on a hot summer day.

Out There is definitely worth a visit, and with some good deals on Meituan – like lattes for RMB 9.9 and the BOGO Americano deal – it’s bang for your buck as well.

Thank you, young man. I take my coffee in a cup. Also, WTF is with this "coffee"? Trendy, innovative foodies---that would be myself---now say "coffee bean-based beverage." Get with the times. Either that or go affogato yerself.
