A Few Art Exhibitions to Catch as Summer Turns to Fall

A handful of international and Chinese art exhibitions worth checking out in the near future, from Fauvism to New Realism to folk arts and Oracle Bones.

Matisse by Matisse at UCCA

Presented in collaboration with the Musée Matisse, Le Cateau-Cambrésis, this exhibition is the largest solo exhibition of French Fauvist artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954) in China to date. Taking its name for the idea of Matisse being the exhibition’s imagined curator, “Matisse by Matisse” features more than 200 works by the artist, covering Matisse’s entire career from his early work to turn towards Fauvism and study of portraiture through various mediums, among other highlights.

White Holes: The Mysteries and Modern Perceptions of Oracle Bone Script

The Oracle Bones – bones of turtles and other animals covered in ancient Chinese script used in rituals of divination during the Shang Dynasty – are today considered objects which gave birth to Chinese script as well as important primary resources on the ancient dynasty. This multi-artist exhibition at 798 CUBE looks at interpretations of the mysteries and influence of these objects through various mediums of art.

Yves Klein: Painter of Space at Guardian Art Center

The first large-scale retrospective for French New Realism artist Yves Klein, this exhibition, organized in collaboration with the French Embassy in China, presents the entire trajectory of Klein’s career through the ideas of monochronism, materiality of the body, and immateriality of art.

Homage to 1953: Selected Folk Arts & Crafts at Tsinghua University Art Museum

A throwback to the first National Folk Art and Crafts Exhibition held in 1953, this homage showcases 3000 pieces of arts and crafts from all across China. Works on display include ceramics, embroideries, sculptures, metal handicrafts, and more.
