Don’t Miss Netflix Comedian Kavin Jay’s Shows This Week in Beijing

Beijing, get ready to laugh until your sides hurt because comedy sensation Kavin Jay is bringing his hilarious show to town! Jay will be performing four shows in Beijing from Apr 18-20 and this is one comedian you don’t want to miss.

Hailing from Malaysia, Jay is one of the country’s most prominent stand-up comedians, becoming a household name in both Malaysia and Southeast Asia. He then gained worldwide recognition after his Netflix special Everybody Calm Down launched in 2018. The special garnered much critical acclaim and was even named one of The Wrap's top 10 Netflix specials of that year.

Jay has also been featured on Comedy Central Asia, BBC 2 and has performed at numerous comedy festivals including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and the Hong Kong International Comedy Festival.

Jay started his comedy career back in 2006 and this will be his second time performing in Beijing, having previously performed at the Chao Hotel back in 2019. On how he feels about returning to Beijing, Jay told the Beijinger “I'm looking forward to the food, the last time I was in Beijing I could not fathom how all the food was so good. The hot pot was mind blowing and I really enjoyed the barbecue as well, but this time I'm really looking forward to trying Beijing duck and pulled noodles. Also, I am looking forward to the audience, I remember them being one of the warmest crowds I performed to (on my last tour in China).”

Known as the "grumpiest comedian in Malaysia" Jay’s act is built on his razor-sharp wit and no-holds-barred humor which allows him to tackle controversial topics with hilarious results. Whether he’s addressing cultural quirks or sharing personal anecdotes from his own life, Jay's comedy is sure to hit home with audiences of all backgrounds.

Despite his success, Jay’s journey into the comedy scene wasn’t an easy ride, sharing in an interview with the Beijinger back in 2019 that “It [comedy] came with practice. When I started about 15 years ago, it was one of those things where I didn’t know what I was doing. I basically just gathered 150 of my friends, put them in a bar, and started telling jokes. It didn’t really work out, because I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t know what a joke was to begin with, so it ended up being a bunch of setups with no punchlines. The worst part was that it was a bunch of my friends! They gave me a bunch of pity laughs, which are very obvious. I remember after the show people were coming up to me and saying, ‘Great show!’ with lies in their eyes. I knew that, behind my back, they were saying, ‘Why is he doing this, he’s not funny.’ But in a way, that actually spurred me on a little bit.

At first, I wanted to quit with comedy then and there, you know, bucket list, check, done. Then, I got invited to another open mic about a week later, and I thought, ‘Hey, if I keep doing this, maybe I’ll get good enough.’ So, over the years I learned how to do stand-up comedy. It was at least three or four years before anything happened for me.”
