Inside Jietai Temple, the hundreds of niches once filled by miniature Buddhas are empty. Over 1,300 years old, the temple was never restored after Japanese soldiers destroyed it seventy years ago, though carved marble embel_lishments hint at the temple's former splendor. Initiation rituals for novice monks joining Jietaisi included fasting and burning marks onto their freshly tonsured heads. The temple dates back to before the Tang dynasty, though the current building was part of a Qing era refurbishment. Several old pines on the premises date back over 800 years to the Liao and Jin dynasties.
Subway/bus: Take the subway to Pingguoyuan, change to bus 931. From Fuchengmen, Tourist Bus 7 (6303 5066) makes a three-stop journey to Jietai Si, Shihuadong Caves, and Tanzhe Si. The tour costs RMB 38. Car: Take No 108 National Rd from Shijingshan. Because 108 National Rd can be a perilous stretch of road, we suggest hiring a driver for a stress-free journey. Approx distance: 40km
