Standup Comic, Amy Schumer Cohort, and Former Bedwetter Mark Normand to Perform at The Bookworm, Sep 17

For anyone who's felt socially awkward, embarrassed, or downright weird, there's a joke by Mark Normand that'll help you laugh it off.

The New York-based comic (who will perform at The Bookworm on September 17) has appeared on late-night talk shows like Conan and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, cracking wise about quirky tendencies. And while he's quick to joke about being neurotic, his delivery is refreshingly relaxed and laid back, setting audiences at ease as he makes jokes at his own expense. One of his Colbert routines, for instance, went like this: "Ever leave the house without headphones? Thoughts are not good. All this time I thought I liked music. Turns out I just hate my brain?" before equating it with an "insecurity playlist on shuffle."

All that might endear him to his fellow weirdos in the audience, while his Twitter feed is even more relatable. On it, he jots some pretty universal, downright ridiculous jokes like: "They let you pick your seat on the plane. I'd rather pick who I sit next to. Make it like a dating app. 'Nazi with service dog, swipe left!'" Equally great: he's not above cracking the occasional cheesy dad joke, recently tweeting: "If you're a doctor and you have to break it to a patient that they have diabetes, just tell them, don't sugar coat it."

A bio on The Bookworm's website describes Normand as being "born and raised in New Orleans, LA surprisingly to two normal parents. As a kid, he spent most of his time shooting short films and wetting the bed. He started doing comedy right after college and quickly moved to New York." He's since made many late night appearances and toured clubs and college campuses across the country. He released his first hour-long Comedy Central special, Don't Be Yourself, this past May. In an interview with axs.com ahead of his special's airing, he recalled befriending star comedienne Amy Schumer at an early point in both their careers. After seeing one of his sets in New York, she invited Normand on tour. "We would all go out drinking at night after the shows and she would always be on her laptop writing. She was writing (the script for her hit 2015 film) Trainwreck the whole time. We had no idea. Then one day she invited me to her hotel and she showed me a pilot for her TV show. I just watched all these little steps. From clubs to theaters, then from theaters to arenas, now she’s a movie star; the whole thing was crazy.”

Though he has yet to reach the heights of stardom that Schumer now inhabits, Normand is gaining plenty of traction. One article points out that he was named one of the “10 Best Comedians on Each Coast” and The Village Voice’s “Best Comedian of 2013.” Impressive as those honors are, he's sure to achieve much more soon – you can see his growth as a performer and joke writer from the solid Conan and Colbert appearances he did awhile back, to the even sharper performance he gives on his special.
