Baoyuan Jiaozi Wu 宝源饺子屋

Ever wished dumplings had exteriors to match their mysteriously exciting fillings? Then head to Baoyuan for a healthful rainbow of dumplings, their dough dyed with vegetable and fruit such as spinach, carrot, blueberry and grape. The dumplings are wrapped in a yuanbao (silver ingot) shape, and are larger and fuller than crescent-shaped dumplings. An order of six dumplings is generally under RMB 10 – and scrumptious. Particularly creative vegetarian options pack in smoked beancurd, celery, mushrooms, eggs, chives, cabbage, carrots and cellophane noodles. Tables are often full but turnover is high, so you won't have to wait too long. Traditionally dressed waitstaff are a bit overly attentive, but accommodating.

A unique take on jiaozi

Review of Baoyuan Jiaozi Wu

I'm a little surprised this place has such high reviews. The jiaozi can come in different color skins so that's a nice unique touch. However, I'm a little disappointed with the 馅儿(fillings). I can't really taste the difference or all the ingredients, perhaps the ingredients are too fine and too hard to discern which is which. Some of the jiaozi fillings are unique and quite good. I also like a few of their seafood dishes. Prices are ok but a little high for jiaozi and ordinary Chinese food. It can also get crowded so you have to wait for a table/service.
A good place to eat if you're in the neighborhood. I recommend everyone who likes jiaozi give them a try. I personally won't go out of my way to eat here though.

The king of the jiaozi joints

Huuuuuuuge offer of jiaozi and all of those I tried were equally delicious. Plus, it was quite easy on the wallet, so don't hesitate to order lots of kinds, you'll in any way finish them!

Best Dumplings - Period

I am not a big fan of dumplings, but Baoyuan Jiaozi Wu makes me a fan, but only of their dumplings. The different fillings seem endless, but each and every one of them work. It is definitely worth a try even if you don't like dumplings. Recommendation would be the purple colored dumplings, which has a crunchy cabbage filling - delicious!

good vegetarian dumplings

Although I'm not a vegetarian, a vegetarian friend of mine dragged me to this place since he said it had so many good dumpling options. I'm not usually a fan of vegetarian food, but these dumplings were fantastic. They have all kinds of fillings (the standard cabbage, mushroom, etc) as well as some mysterious ones that I couldn't identify. They also have some sichuanese food, but I thought the dumplings were a cut above the rest of the food and I'd stick to those (especially since they're so cheap). One thing that freaked me out was the colors. It's just weird to see purple dumplings even if they're supposedly naturally dyed. I don't have any reason to doubt that they are natural, it'd just a weird experience. Also, if you for some reason don't like this dumpling place the Lufthansa center has a lot of other good options, so I'd recommend a trip no matter what.

Jiaozi, traditional Chinese food, novel cookery

Jiaozi,a traditional food in China, liked by most of Chinese, has some special ways to cook and eat in Baoyuan Jiaozi Wu. I believe that you will taste of different flavour.

There are lovely scallion pancakes to start, only greasy insofar as this is a desirable trait in a scallion pancake. They are a pleasant accomplice to meaty spareribs that a child might gnaw for a quarter-hour.

A nice place to visit

I found this place totally by accident and immediately like it.

It looks no different from any other Chinese restaurants. At least it does not have any fancy exterior decoration. But when you go in, you will be impressed by its indoor decor, sporting a red lantern here and a crane-shaped incense burner there. Besides jiaozi, which are ample in size and variety, they also have good Sichuan dishes.

I introduced several friends to this place. Reason? The first time I went there, I ordered a vegetable dish. After a while, a waiter told me that she's sorry that she can't serve me that dish because the vegetable is not fresh enough. It's the first time that I heard such a thing. It impressed me.

Something for everyone

Since I stopped eating meat a number of years ago, I've given dumplings a bit of a miss but this place has more than enough varieties to suit vegetarians or fish-only eaters - and they're good - you can barrel through a base number of 12 of these goodies in a record amount of time. The only caveat - count them! The last two occasions I ate there, I was two dumplings down each time - not a huge deal but whether it's carelessness or regular practice, no one likes to not be given their dumpling fill!

One of my favourite place for dumplings

The colourful dumplings ,yes they are quite pleasing to the eyes.
But the soft dumplings melting in your mouth are good for taste and not heavy for the stomach.
Yes its a bit pricey, but its clean and nice.
Its still okay for me as spending about 50 rmb for a eating out is still reasonable.

Not what it used to be

Just ate there today and it's been a few months since the last visit. Prices have gone up AGAIN, portions are smaller, dumplings are now heavy on veg/light on meat and the decoration is becoming more tackyfancy.

Colored dumplings are indeed a novelty, and this place was my local dumpling house for years, but the whole operation now smacks of laowai=$$$ and is geared towards producing a lower quality dumpling for a higher price. Tastier, more authentic, and more reasonably priced dumplings can be found in most other neighborhoods of Beijing.

Not very good, overpriced, surly staff

I am used to being ripped off and encounters with sullen staff in China, but this place really was pretty bad.

They ushered us to a seat and when my Chinese dining partner asked for a menu they told her 'the menu will come later'! Seems that when they're busy they do not have enough menus to go around, so we had to wait a considerable amount of time to even get our hands on the menu.

The staff are sullen and rude even by Beijing standards.

The jiaozi are horrendously overpriced, a bit of colouring does not make a good jiaozi and the novelty value quickly wears off once you realise the jiaozi are cold and have exceptionally small amounts of meat in the meat ones.

If you want the best jiaozi in town, give this place a swerve and head for the Manchurian Special Flavor Jiaozi restaurant (Dongzhimen) or even the very cheap Yi Pin Xiao Long in Sanlitun, where the xiaolongbaos are very good for the price, is my advice.

Best dumplings

I can't believe I never added my review of this place until now, since it's still my favorite place for dumplings. Once you get beyond the novelty of dumplings that come in green, red and purple skins (flavoured with different vegetables) you find that they also have loads of fillings that you'll never have tried or even thought of before. My favorite is the one with peanuts and bacon (la rou).

The dumplings are great, but there's an affiliated Sichuan restaurant next door - you can sit in either and order from both menus. The Sichuan restaurant is more "decorated," the dumplings place is more tables, chairs and ready-to-go simple. Order some dumplings then something from the Sichuan menu - I have no shame in saying the gong bao ji ding here was among the best I've had in Beijing.

Very good value too - you can eat very well for less than RMB 40 per head easily, which isn't bad going at all these days.

Ach du lieber Jiaozi

My mum is a typical Dongbei woman, which means she loves cooking Jiaozi all the time. Grew up eating jizozi so super often, I am absolutely not a big fan of it. The frequency that I eat some Jiaozi is like what many foreigners would hit KFC or McDonalds, once in a blue moon. But this Jiaozi place is another story for me. I devoured like 20 something for the first time and then I visited this place once again in the same week. If you don't speak Chinese or you have problem understanding the tricky Chinese menu, choose whatever you like randomly, you will love what you get.

Go here for great dumplings

The mouth feel of these dumplings are spot on. The purple dumplings with onion/crispy rice/pork are among the highlights. I ordered many different kinds and was not let down by a single one. Priced around the same as the many low-end dumpling joints around the city.

Great eats at a great price!

Quaint, especially to relive Beijing as Third World Country

Serviceable dumplings, though I failed to taste a significant difference between what they serve up and what's available at basically every other dumpling joint in town. Multi-colored dumpling skins are a nice touch I suppose.

But what this place has going for it is that ramshackle, crammed-in-a-corner, don't-set-foot-in-the-washroom feel that used to be prevalent in Beijing but now is a disappearing breed.

Great for out-of-town visitors who are sorely disappointed to see Beijing's streets filled with Audis and well-dressed people and who long for a journey of hardship and deprivation and want to have fantastic stories of how they bit the bullet and managed to order themselves a meal in an honest-to-goodness local eatery in communist China.

Cute and Yummy Dumplings

I love love love this place. The dumplings were so cute you wouldn't want to eat them right away. My friends and I took numerous pictures of the dishes before we finally decided to dig in. And of course, after tasting them, we ordered two more rounds of the mushroom/chicken and egg/chives dumplings. The service was attentive and efficient. Very friendly waitresses I must say. The bill came up to just over RMB 150 for the 5 of us and I thought that was excellent value for money.
