Barolo 巴罗洛

Cool, casual but unmistakably upscale, Barolo is one of Beijing's top Italian restaurants, boasting the finest imported ingredients (including white truffles) and an exhaustive wine list. Three-course business set meals are a more affordable choice than the pricey a la carte menu. Service is charming, as you should expect from the Ritz-Carlton's flagship restaurant. Editor's choice for "Restaurant of the Year" in our 2008 Restaurant Awards.

What a disappointment

Review of Barolo

Was there on 27.AUG.2010 with 4 people because I heard BAROLO was the best Italian in Beijing.

Nice classic atmosphere.
Nice Carpaccio creation for starter.
Grilled turbot was OK, no sensation.
Attentive English speaking service staff.
This was all about the positive side.

No other guests on a Friday evening - suspicious.
Tuna for starter - tasted like directly out of a cheap can.
Foie Gras - overdone, no real taste, far from what was expected and known from other Italians in town.
Risotto with only half cooked rice - not at all like you wished it were.
Ordered Espresso and got espresso size filter coffee in cold espresso cup. Waiter confirmed to know about this and changed to real Espresso.
Ordered "Café coretto" (very typical Italian) but this was completely unknown to staff. Well, at least I could get a Sambuca to put into the espresso myself to make one.

The very high pricing and nice atmosphere did let us hope for much a better experience.

The Italian Chef, even though nicely greeted in Italian upon arrival, could have had the courtesy to come and ask for our opinion on the food - he had nothing to do anyway.

In total it was a real disappointment of our excpectations - and an expensive one.

Had a fantastic lunch here recently, the new chef is a wholesale improvement. Great experience. Lamb ragout tagliatelle, delicious imported mozzarella, egg baked with black truffle and more. Definitely has a shout for Beijing's best Italian restaurant.

My second visit was definitely far better from the first one, the hotel service and renovation odor is much better.

Atmosphere is better, great staff, great smile, great food, great dessert and more selection of wine.

This Italian restaurant overall is better from the sister property on the west side, more intimate, more vibrant colors and you can practically see nice open kitchen. It's more subtle and more class, now I only wish the armrest for the chair is slightly lower, other than that it's perfect.

Named after a wine of Italy's Pedmont region, it's a take on Classic Italian cuisine. Try the prosciutto for RMB 130 and best any wine order will receive a complimentary palate of sorbet.

The wine list is longer than the tall of your body and it complements all the food as well.

Service is excellent, impressed with the "bonjour no" greetings as soon as you step in the door.
