Carmen

Nali Mall’s Tapas has reopened as Carmen in an attractive whitewashed building across the street. Tapas plates, cold and hot, range from RMB 10-38, with the patatas bravas particularly passing muster. You’ll find all the Andalusian authenticity you need in a menu that takes in hearty salads, cold platters, paella and even roasted whole suckling pig. Perfect for a boozy lunch or a spirited evening in front of the live band. Voted "Outstanding Spanish" in the Beijinger's 2011 Reader Restaurant Awards.

I had to pay for the mistake of the service. Unbelievable!!!

No other place a mistake of the service can be as expensive as here!I went to Carmen yesterday evening for dinner. Having ordered a bottle of red wine for 190,- RMB makes me expect to pay for the same and not the for the 460,- RMB one which the waiter took to me unasked by mistake. The dinner ended with a one hour discussion with the service captain. The sentence”The customer is always right” definitely doesn’t apply to this place. I had to pay for the mistake of the service. Unbelievable!!!

Wanna feel like Spain without leaving Beijing? Just come to Carmen. The owner of this place is like a Film director. Everthing makes sense; decoration, lights, colors, ambience, food quality, prices, service. The most accurate example of a real TAPAS BAR/RESTAURANT that you could find in the South of Spain. Prices are very reasonable and suitable for everyone, as you can have dinner here for 100 rmb or go up to 500 rmb.

Not a true Flamenco tapas place

We had a pretty good experience the last Saturday night although we did not try all the dishes.
The decor is nothing traditional for a tapas place even if it looks like they tried to do smth.
The service was very good, no problem with that.
The tapas are nothing special and they are expensive
The three ouïghours who were playing were doing a good job but the music was not flamenco but some cheezy covers with a latino style...

Overall, I had a nice evening in a noisy place with people singing and claping....for the ones who like that kind of atmosphere from time to time and are ready to pay the price !

hands down the closest thing I've had to Tapas in Spain. Unbelievably delicious food and selection. Wine list also incredible. The atmosphere makes you feel as if you are in a true Spanish Restaurant which also lends itself to the whole experience. The live music is a treat as well but a little too hard to hear conversations at the same time. Owner is also a little rude to the wait staff and doesn't help them in a rush which is unfortunate to witness, but if you can bare through all that, it's definitely worth it.

An odd experience

I went here on someone's recommendation. We were two people and the place was 90% empty. The waiter told us on arrival rudely that we were not allowed to sit anywhere but the two two-seater tables that were positioned very closely to some people already dining. (Their tables are pushed extremely close together.) I thought that was inane to squish us uncomfortably next to people when there were was tons of plenty of space and I didn't believe what the waiter said that, in an hour, the place would be completely packed and they couldn't afford to lose 2 spare seats to us. His tone of voice was offensive and he offered no apology, nothing. So I walked out, but my friend asked to speak to the manager who let us have a 4 seat table....right next to the door, which turned out to be extremely annoying because of the way it rattles and shakes every time someone comes through the door.

Also, we were positioned really closely to the live band which was much too loud. Other diners complained and I watched a waiter go up the two guys playing guitar to ask him to quiet down and I saw the guitarist roll his eyes and ignore the waiter. My friend asked them to play a little softer and the band told us to sit further away (because there were still lots of open seats throughout the restaurant, an hour later, contrary to what the waiter told us) but we couldn't because of course, the waiters had told us we're not allowed to move. Then after 15 min of playing, the band just stopped and hung out at the bar, because it seems like they got frustrated with everyone complaining about their music.

But onto the food. I don't eat pork and as a result, we weren't able to get the 10 tapas for 100 deal because the chef said that too many of the pre-designated tapas platter would have pork in it and they wouldn't swap it out for anything else. So, we ordered individual dishes so it ended up being sort of expensive and the food didn't seem that special. The fish salad with cream cheese was really strange. I don't think it should be called a salad. It didn't have greens to it and essentially was a round block of cream cheese (think like the Philadelphia cream cheese tubs you buy at the grocery store) dumped onto the plate with fish draped around the sides and some cherry tomatoes and parsley on top. I never thought a dish could be too cheesy, but that was too heavy laden with cheese.

Our own waiter was really courteous and nice. He tried to accommodate us as much as possible, and it seems like they work on a table by table system as in each server takes care of a certain section of tables, which is nice to see in BJ. However, the whole experience was just too odd. The rudeness to us, the rudeness between the staff and the band, and the lackluster food. Doubt I'll be going back.

Tapas revelation

I'd become convinced that tapas restaurants are always going to be expensive affairs. Carmen proves that doesn't need to be the case, with good food and a great dining environment that almost - just almost - convinces you that this you're in Seville rather than Sanlitun. Well, except it seems you're almost certain to run into somebody you know.

Good choice of dishes, and though we didn't try it the paella (I'm assuming that's what it was)looked great. The patatas bravas was good, likewise the grilled chicken on toast. The food wasn't 10/10, but good for my first visit and enough to make me want to return.

The guitarists add to the atmosphere without playing so loud that you have to shout at each other (looking at you, Red Rose Xinjiang), and the staff take decent care of diners.

Best is the sensible pricing - we were really just there for a snack, ordered a little too much, felt full, and spent RMB 80 on food for two. Not bad in today's Sanlitun. Drinks brought the total bill up to around RMB 150-170. I'll go back and see if it's worth an extra star, but I reckon Carmen is one of the better restaurants to have opened in the past year in Beijing.

Bad service. Small portions. Poor seating options.

Had lunch here today.

I admit I'm not very experienced with Spanish food but after spending over 200 yuan here and ordering numerous dishes my dining companion and I left bored, irritated and still hungry despite the fact we weren't starving to begin with.

Bored because of the slow, forgetful service. Irritated because a Spanish guy was pacing through the restaurant the entire time we were there, shouting into his mobile phone, and still hungry because of the miniscule portions.

The service is very slow, with only one waiter working the whole restaurant and one guy who doesn't take orders but just brings out food/drinks.

Small portions, for example three tiny meatballs for 30 yuan. I know these are "tapas" dishes but we ordered a few of them and a salad. The salad was ok, it had chicken, a little cheese and leafy greens with an olive oil pesto-type dressing.

Asahi on draft for 24 yuan for a single (not a pint).

Seating is cafeteria style with just rows of benches and chairs, no booths, no privacy. The Spanish group we were unfortunately seated next to (featuring mobile phone guy) were loud and stared at us constantly as we ate.

Not a good place for lunch. Maybe for drinks and snacks or something at night when the band is playing and you aren't hungry.

Good value

I like the tapas here very much. It is good for friends because you can just eat the amount that you like and enjoy the lovely Spanish wine and good live music.
It was very busy when I was there and I have a fun time. The tapas are not amazing, but they are fine for a small snack if meeting friends.

The music is the highlight at Carmen...

... which it really shouldn't be but then I am a vegetarian, so I miss out on many of the food highlights. If you are veggie, there's not a lot of variety here, but there are some great staples - very good value Spanish Omelette and a rich, garlicy potato salad are two examples. I'd also highly recommend the grilled asparagus, perfectly done and with a lovely flavour. My meat-eating friend enjoyed her mussels very much too.

We regretted ordering the RMB40 'cheese platter' - very good Mahon cheese, but so little of it for that price. The crème brûlée was strongly lemon flavoured, a sore disappointment to a crème brûlée purist! And while the Sangria is good, you'll get more for the same price at Olas Tapas around the corner ;-)

BUT the live band (Wednesday to Sunday) is so enjoyable, and the decor so charming that we'll probably be back despite the shortcomings! I would have given it 3.5 if I'd been able.
