Friendly learning environment

Review of Culture Yard

I used to volunteer at culture yard and was able to work closely with the staff. Everyone is extremely friendly and it was truly a great experience being able to interact with people from so many diverse backgrounds. During my time at the yard, I felt at home working in such a relaxed environment with an amiable group of people. There is a lot of emphasis placed teacher-student interaction and besides learning the language, there are many cultural activities within the Yard every week. It is a fun and active environment that is hard to fine in many language centers within Beijing.

The Incredible Culture Yard

I was Culture Yard’s first Mandarin class student. Brendan taught me when the bricks and mortar were not yet finished at the Culture Yard space. In fact, it had not yet officially opened its doors; I had to wait a month after my first class before the ribbon cutting party!

But the masonry dust and cold did not matter. What mattered is that Ilya, the founder of Culture Yard, has a great vision for the space, and he started by treating everyone who is involved in classes, workshops, events and hikes at Culture Yard as members of a big family of cultural exploration. He was eager to invite me to get to know the rest of the Culture Yard staff not just as businesspeople and officers, but as people from different backgrounds - Chinese and laowai - who all have something interesting to share. I am proud to have been a part of that family early on, and I am happy that it has expanded and diversified so rapidly.

The language teachers are excellent. Even though I only took classes two nights a week for about four months, within two months I was really coming along in my Mandarin, and by the end of the course I was able to pick up the rest on the streets, more or less (not that more classes wouldn’t have helped!) Brendan is a fantastic teacher and he was very attentive to making sure I got the basics down to maximize the ease of learning later on. He, like the rest of the Culture Yard family, is positive, encouraging and energetic. I also took a photography workshop with Peter, which was one of the most valuable days I ever spent in Beijing.

In Beijing I had many great friends and plenty of places I loved to hang out. None of them comes close to being “home” like Culture Yard. I enthusiastically recommend it, not just to people who want to take classes, but to travelers and locals who want to find a welcoming and interesting environment. If it’s not yet a Beijing destination, it will be soon.

Honest, high-quality classes in a homely, courtyard atmosphere

When I arrived in Beijing I attended several classes at different language schools. It struck me that the contrast between the flashy, professional-looking advertisements and the actual classes were quite big. I was often disappointed by the unexperienced, giggly teachers, old materials, and dusty undecorated classrooms.

When I came to Culture Yard, I experienced something very different. I first had a talk with the coordinator to discuss my learning goals, my level, and my schedule. He explained the course in detail, and I could attend a trial class. I immediately felt that this school is more than just making fast money - they actually care about teaching, and it shows!

I've almost finished my course, and I will continue for sure. Brandon (Fang laoshi) is knowledgeable, patient, and devoted. The free Arabic coffee is also a good reason to stay (just joking - but it is good coffee though!)

Instead of taking classes in some depressing office building, Culture Yard has a lovely, homely courtyard. I've joined several acitivities, such as the movie night, a hiking trip, and Halloween. I had a great time, and it was actually a good opportunity to practice my Chinese :)

A little sloppy

I'll start this off by saying that I had been to Culture Yard once before and had a nice time. However I recently tried to go again with some friends for their Halloween Movie Night event. I RSVPed and they took down my name and phone number, presumably to call me if we didn't show up. I even called back well before the event started to confirm my reservation and change the number of people in our group so as to leave enough room for others. Once we got there, we were turned away at the door because the place was too full. I told them that I had made a reservation and had just called a few hours earlier and they told me that they gave up our seats because it was too busy. No call to check if we were still coming and no apology after the fact. The guy smoking out front acted like it was a major burden to arrange any extra room for us inside and we were pretty turned off by that point so we left. It's a shame because it seems like this place puts on decent events. Hopefully this is something they'll improve in the future.
