Duck de Chine 全鸭季

Located away from street view just behind Pacific Century Place in Sanlitun, Duck de Chine is part of the 1949-The Hidden City dining and nightlife complex. The restaurant’s industrial chic decor creates a relaxed, classy ambiance, while the menu incorporates both Chinese and French duck-roasting traditions. Sets ranging RMB 188-388 per person feature an impressive variety of duck and non-duck dishes to sample. Of course, the classic Peking duck combo – crisp roast duck to roll in pancakes with plum sauce, spring onion and cucumber – is also available as a standalone dish. Other dishes worth trying are the plum-infused pumpkin and braised oyster mushroom wrapped in tofu skin. 10 percent service charge. English menu, major credit cards accepted. Voted "Outstanding Beijing Duck" in our 2011 Restaurant Awards.

Ducktastic

It's a very Westernized place. You probably figured that out from all the other reviews already, but if you need it spelled out, there you go. I don't dislike that on principle or anything - I just dislike the fact that this means they've used this to cut a couple of sneaky corners.

In traditional places, there's three ways to eat the whole bird - Peking duck rolls, duck carcass (pepper-and-salted, stewed, whatever) and duck soup. RMB 238 (or whatever it costs) only gets you duck rolls. You have to tell the waitress you want your carcass (either takeaway for free, or add labor costs of RMB 38 for the second "way"). Duck soup is an egregious RMB 42 per person. What the hell, Duck de Chine? We forked out the RMB 38 and it wasn't even very good.

They also don't get all the meat off the carcass. Irritating.

HOWEVER - the duck itself was fabulous. Fabulous fabulous fabulous. Love the leanness, love that they've kept the skin crisp and oily. LOVE. I would come back for this duck time and time and time again.

Other dishes that we ordered were tasty (lamb, mushrooms) but a little overpriced. You do pay for the setting. We were sitting near-ish the door and lord, it was drafty.

10% service charge not really justified. Still, I would come back for the duck (and just the duck!)

Best Duck

I have been to Duck de chine several times and almost all other beijing duck places in Beijing and DDC has hands down the best beijing duck. I do find the other dishes just so-so and the place is expensive therefore could not give it a 5.

decent, but service needs improvement

I took some out-of-towners here tonight. The ambience is great, and the food is good too. I would say the duck was above average. However, as I have written many times before regarding restaurants in Beijing, the service leaves something to be desired. My gripes stem from 2 situations: 1.) the waiter took away my hoisin sauce while I still had duck on my plate and was actively eating it - that's a big no-no; 2.) we ordered a bottle of wine and instead of the staff pro-actively filling my glass during the dinner when it was empty, I had to ask them to re-fill it. Come on people, raise your game!

Awesome duck in a really hidden city!

My boyfriend made reservation for new year's eve dinner and I was really looking forward to beijing roast duck in beijing for the first time! Unfortunately, the taxi driver dropped us off nowhere near Duck de Chine and we were walking around asking for directions and no one seemed to know where it was! So after 45mins of walking in the cold, we decided to call the search off and headed back to our hotel.
So when I came back to visit my boyfriend after a month, we were adamant to go dine there and my boyfriend again made reservation for Chinese new year reunion dinner. This time, we did our homework and took the subway and walked a little, which wasn't too hard at all. When we got there, we immediately liked the ambience and understood why not many people knew of its existence as it is located away from main roads. Since it was CNY eve, there weren't many people and our duck came quite fast. We were greeted with a gong when they brought out the duck and the chef started carving it. We were served with the carved duck coupled with special swirly sauce, vegetables and the white pancake/crepe. When I took the first bite, it was like love at first taste. The skin was crispy yet succulent and the meat was just nice, not dry at all. We ate the skin on its own and wrapped the duck meat in the crepe with veg and sauce. It was the best beijing duck I've tasted so far! I refused to have any dessert after because I didn't want to remove that delicious taste from my mouth. That's how good it was. We concluded that the effort of looking for this hidden city was all worth it!

Nice place and service

It's a great place in overall. The staffs are friendly, ambience is good, service is nice. Definitely a place to bring your guests to have dinner. Do reserve beforehand though, so you would not have to wait for your table.

I found the duck to be average, nothing too special. The sauce is also average as well. It is less greasy than other roast ducks I think. The other food however are great. The food came fast as well.

One of The Best Ducks in Town

This restaurant is busy busy busy so it must be good right.

Ideal location and if you don’t book you won;t always get in when you want to. The staff are really friendly and helpful and they make your evening special. The duck is always perfect and one of the best we’ve had. They have changed the menu and some of our favorites fell away but they always make them if you just ask !
They don’t always have the wine you want ; but that’s not too serious as long as the food is good .

The only negative is that the toilets are limited, downstairs and mostly occupied by staff. Hot and smelly. Not a great feeling when the Chef is cutting up your Duck. Go before you go.

Dim sum lunch: skip.

Overrated dim sum lunch. The dishes were tasty, but not spectacular. If you're already in the neighborhood and looking for a place to have dim sum during your lunch hour and want to go to a place where other people might be wearing suits, then this is the place to go; otherwise, it's probably best to go to Duck de Chine for the duck...makes sense, considering the name.

Note: I haven't tried to the duck.

They have a lot of what in Chinese cuisine is known as the “breath of the work.”

To some extent,it's just OK

Great duck, great location.

A great restaurant, great decor and not expensive. When we first went we slightly worried that it was going to cost a fortune, but to get a few dishes and a whole duck with some drinks (beer, no wine) cost around 300 - 400 RMB for 2 people.

Ive been here with guests in Beijing and it really is a special place to take people for duck. And the duck tastes fantastic. They still talk about it when I get home too.

The only critisism, its not that easy to direct people to the restaurant if they have not been there before.

Best Duck to be, Best Duck to find

The duck meat. The balance of fat and lean meat is right in the middle of Quanjude and Dadong. As a cholesterol lover, I wouldn't mind Quanjude's fatness although it does spoil my stomach a little after a while. But I do mind Dadong's thinness. How do they expect someone to chew on something hard like that?

The duck taste. When the meat is just perfect, it's hard to be disappointed unless the cooking and the sauce are terribly bad, which they are not. Besides the traditional dipping sauce and stuff, they also offer a Cantonese style sauce to eat with. It's a interesting touch, esp for people who are not used to the baldness of North Chinese cuisine.

The atmosphere. Unlike Dadong's swanky and Quanjude's touristy. Duck De Chine is very mysterious, artistic and elegant. From the paintings on the wall to the beautiful duck decoration on the table, it simply makes you feel like having a good appetite. Another reason I like here more than DaDong and Quanjude.

The others. Besides duck, the restaurant also serves dim sum, lamb feast and a few western dishes... no comments on them.

Efffective Roasted Duck

The decor was simply very nice, refined it makes perfect chinease cuisine. The menu was extensive, the food was delicious and beautifully presented, and the roasted duck was delicios with good rate.

Peking duck paired with Bollinger ...

Review of Duck de Chine

Questionable Bollinger pairing aside, this industrial-chic duck emporium is one of Beijing's best. Like Da Dong, the ducks are roasted a little longer (65 minutes apparently), so less oily (and marginally less succulent) than traditional Quanjude type birds. Aside from the traditional whole roasted duck (announced by a gong), the duck tacos are worth a try, served with a good fruity salsa, and the duck liver on toast - warm, rich and creamy - is a treat.

A Place to Impress

In the past 3 years, I’ve been to many of the city’s top duck restaurants, but when a friend of a friend from high school came into town for only one day, I was eager to impress them with one of the city’s newest additions to the list of top duck restaurants: I introduced them to Duck de Chine, located in the factory-chic setting of 1949.

The setting was elegant, refined and upscale and the menu brings together recipes from both Chinese and French cuisine. Within the restaurant, you feel like you could be anywhere in the world. The menu was extensive, the food was delicious and beautifully presented, and the duck was superb with the highlight of the experience being the special duck plum sauce with swirls of sesame and peanut sauce topped with roasted garlic. Brilliant. Another highlight of the evening was the Australian Lobster with E-Fu noodles and the Pan-Fried Beef Tenderloin.

Overall: A place to impress visitors or business clients, the interior is exquisite and I’m sold by their special duck sauce (plum sauce with swirls of peanut and sesame sauce topped with roasted garlic). My mouth waters just thinking about it. Great food, even better ambiance, so-so service, and expect to pay a pretty penny.

Great place to take guests...

Review of Duck de Chine

Tried Duck de Chine this weekend with some out of town guests. Tucked away behind the Pacific Park Century in the Hidden Complex, DDC ranks as one of the best, and possibly most expensive ducks in Beijing. As soon as you enter the impressive front door, you are lured by the sweet smell of roasting wood--you really know they are making duck the right way (shame on all you electric oven duck restaurants!). We ordered a whole duck, duck tacos, eggplant, spinach and fried rice. The first thing they bring to the table is fixings for the sauce. Everyone has an individual bowl for plum sauce, but then the servers drizzled sesame and peanut sauce, swirled the bowl to create a beautiful kaleidoscope of color and topped it with roasted garlic. It is very impressive. The duck was very good and crowned with the best duck skin I've ever had. The duck tacos were interesting...served with plum sauce, chopped iceberg and crispy mini shells and the duck filling was diced and tossed with some scallions, mushrooms and peppers. I was tasty, but not something I'd need to order again. The rest of the meal was good, but wouldn't strike me as memorable. Including a 350RMB bottle of wine, the meal came out to 950RMB. I'm glad to have the experience, but I think there are better quality and value ducks to be had in Beijing.

Overpriced fast food

I went to Duck de Chine yesterday for my first and last time. Having found the restaurant by chance some days earlier its setting looked quite appealing to me.

Atmosphere
Located in a beautiful modern courtyard, it sure is a great location. The interior is a good mix between modern and traditional styles. However, the tables are lined up against the walls and are quite close to each other, which made us feel uncomfortably close to our neighbors, although the space would easily allow a more interesting and secluded setup. Adding to the inconvenience was that apparently the place is not ventilated, thus you were sitting enveloped by the fumes of roasting duck & smoke.

Food
Duck (CNY228) - taste was okay, although nothing special, neither the duck nor the accompaniments were anything to write home about or at least inventive.

Pan-fried fish fillet (around 100) - Apparently fried in the same pan as our neighbor's chicken, tasteless and overwhelmed by tacos (?!) and heavily salted spinach.

Lamb (around 80) - actually quite good, but very small serving.

Others - I remember none of the other uninventive dishes, none were in any way justifying their hefty price tag.

Service
Roughly 10 dishes were served in rapid sequence, and we were finished within 45 (!) minutes. As soon as a dish remotely qualified as finished, a waitress quickly removed the dish. At minute 46 the table was completely empty. Never had such a quick dinner in a duck restaurant.

Price
4 persons paid 800 kuai, not worth it.
