The microphones provide quick refrence to whats the importance and relevance of that place. If you have a proper guide you would learn few things about the chinese culture. We had this christine guide who was good.

The Forbidden City is one of those places that people need to go to in Beijing. With it being the center of power for hundreds of years, there is a lot of history to absorb. I've have been several times and each time I have seen something different. Even though many people spend only a day here, I think it is a lot better of an option to spend a couple half days exploring all the various places in and around the Forbidden City. If crowds are not your thing, the parks along the moat (east and west of the south gate to the Forbidden City) offer some peace and quiet. Don't forget to hit up the imperial family's private park in the north side of the Forbidden City.

Absolutely A Must See

If you travel to Beijing, you must see the Forbidden City, but before travelling to Beijing, read Twilight in the Forbidden City by Reginald Fleming Johnston - recently republished and available on Amazon. It will give you a sense of history and the politics of the Forbidden City.

The crowds can be somewhat large, but its great to do this in the morning then exit at the north gate and then head west to Beihai Park.

The audio guide (a recording) that you can rent is very helpful!

garden in the north

walking into the forbidden city from the south gate and walking all the way through it can really make your feet sore and exhaust all your energy. but at the northern end of the city, there is a beautiful garden where you can relax and enjoy some chinese tea. it may be a little more expensive, but you will always be able to tell friends that you sat back and relaxed just like the chinese imperial family used to.

Obviously a must-visit place in Beijing

If you have been in Beijing for longer than a week and haven't visited the Forbidden City you really need to get on it. This is the most famous attraction in all of Beijing, outside of the Great Wall if you consider that in the city. It is worth hiring a reputable english speaking guide so you can understand the uses and architecture. To me, a lot of the buildings look the same but it is so important in history that everybody should visit. Plan a day to do the "usual" attractions in Beijing if you have not already.
