Ganges Indian Restaurant 恒河印度餐厅

The mid-day crowds in the dining rooms of the different branches (Sanlitun, Haidian, Lido and The Place) attest to the popularity of this popular chain's lunchtime buffet. Choose from a selection of North and South Indian classics (tandoori meats, shahi korma, curries, lamb saagwala, aloo mutter, chana masala etc.) and enjoy fresh naan bread and imported Kingfisher beer. Winner of "Best India/Pakistani" in the Beijinger's 2011 Reader Restaurant Awards.

been to the new u-center branch, which is not comparable to the old branch. everything is clean, service is better and the food remains delicious. had chicken tikka, the samosas and their naan. all well prepared and tasty.

don't know if they offer lunch-deals yet, if not, please start it soon.

special award for being asked 10 times for free water refill. with spicy food i don't mind that extra service.

ganges at u-center, wudaokou

tried the new ganges at the u-center yesterday and am completely satisfied.

despite the fact that it is still a bit tricky to find it (either take the elevator next to uniqlo outside the u-center to 6th floor or get in, get to the 6th floor and get out to the roof-garden, ganges is the last restaurant on your left), the new location is a huge add to the chain. the interior is new, nice and not overwhelming, so you can concentrate on your food and are not automatically focused on the walls or the lamps. the toilets were clean and in general it's in no way comparable to the old haidian-branch, which had certainly seen better days.

the food-quality has been good, the service extremely friendly and overall a nice experience. taking into account that the restaurant has been packed, i am not alone with my oppinion. as it is now closer to the station, it becomes a nice alternative to the lushs, la bambas and other restaurants.

good dependable quality indian

Pretty good Indian food with multiple locations and reasonable prices

I've only been to the branches in Wudaokou and The Place. The Place location has good service and a clean, nicer decor compared to Wudaokou. Wudaokou seems more authentic Indian with a weird dingy smell and a bathroom that's too close to tables. However, none of that stops me from going to the Wudaokou location.

I usually get some butter chicken, a random choice of paneer, Estrella or Kingfisher beer and, of course, garlic naan. Sometimes the naan is kinda soggy at Ganges but I guess it's hit and miss. It doesn't seem to happen regularly. Food is good but portions aren't big. I guess they want to let us savor the flavor and save us from ourselves in case we overindulge on heavy curry.

I have no real complaints with this place and haven't experienced bad service like others and haven't seen bugs in my food. I will say nicer locations have nicer service, but that's expected. And if you want to try somewhere else, I'd recommend Masala, which is right off Nanluoguxiang.

New Ganges

Two of us tried the new Ganges above Paddy’s this past week. My first impression was, “thank God Kamat’s is gone”. You can just tell when walking in that this is a professional operation. The manager met us at the door, everything was super clean, and as a concept it is consistent. Except for a few design upgrades (the booth seats are more comfortable), the restaurant looks very similar to the Ganges located elsewhere in the city. I also really like the screen behind the buffet. This time around we tried different menu items so I can’t provide a 1:1 comparison however I will comment on what we ordered. The lamb samosa was lightly fried and filled with ground lamb. By itself it was good but exceptional topped with both the mint and tamarind sauces. Our Chicken Jafrezzy was a big departure from dishes I’ve ordered in the past. Slightly spicy, the chicken was in a tomato sauce with large chunks of onion, green and red peppers. The mushroom soup was made from a corn flour stock with bits of rice and lentil for texture. Recommend you order the soup before a spicy dish. The last dish was a mildly spicy lamb madras which had large chunks of lamb in a brown curry sauce. The naan looked too good eat with the bread almost artistically cut in different shapes topped with garlic and butter. Both Tiger and Carlsberg were on tap but I preferred the Tiger. Service was excellent.

For Indian food lovers

Sometimes classic Indian food gets overlooked in Beijing’s cacophony of food destinations. Guijie, Houhai, Qianmen, Chaoyang Park, Sanlitun and the hutongs between offer every cuisine imaginable; some of it good, some not so good. It’s a shame for the top-notch restaurants because they often get lost in the crowd. As much as I love Chinese food and the occasional pizza, deep down I am an unabashed Indian food lover.

When I am in the mood for Indian food, I go to Ganges. For me Ganges has become a Beijing tradition and I have never left disappointed. Service is impeccable, the restaurant is clean and comfortable and the menu is extensive leaving little to want. An addition to the menu here and a new location there notwithstanding, over the years Ganges has changed little. And why would it? It works.

If you are new to Indian food then I suggest asking the manager for advice. At 50 + pages, the menu is a case study in excellent Indian food and best navigated by someone in the field. My suggestion is to start with the basics: samosa, butter chicken curry, barbecue, naan and a lassi or kingfisher. Go easy on the spice your first time out. Capisci?

If you are new to Ganges but not new to Indian food, dust off your stretchy spandex and go Mike Tyson on the menu. Order all your favorites at once knowing that if you can’t pack it all in during this visit they will package it up in individual plastic containers for your microwaving pleasure later. Go ahead, get your spice on. Don’t hold back. You know your Indian and Ganges is where the rubber meets the road.

As a final tidbit, each of Ganges four locations offers a different dining experience. Lidu is quiet and family friendly. Sanlitun is hip with an outside terrace. The Place is decked out and formal. And Haidian is filled with students and techies from surrounding international companies. Choose accordingly.

Curry withdrawal

When our offices were located in the Pacific Century plaza my coworkers and I would go to Ganges two or three times a month. Now that we’ve moved close to the Olympic Village I’m going through curry withdrawal. Only mediocre Chinese up here…wish I were back in Sanlitun!

It's okay

The food here is just okay. The setting and service is good, but the food, curry/ tikka chicken lacks in flavor. Something about the food quality. I've always been a fan of tikka chicken or the similar, but the taste is not as flavorful as other Indian restaurants I've tried in the the world. The chicken texture is also a little different, I'm not sure whether it's because they put too much tenderizer or it's just chicken in Beijing.

Best place for Indian food in Beijing

The title says it all. If I miss Indian food, this will be the first place I will go. Some say it is not so original but hey, we are in Beijing and I am pretty much satisfied with their food. I just hope the branch in Wudaokou to be bigger. :D

My overall favorite

Review of Ganges Indian Restaurant

There are plenty of choices for Indian food in Beijing but in my opinion Ganges is the best.

To begin with, it’s affordable. Nothing ruins a dinner faster than a four digit bill. Second, the restaurant is clean and comfortable. Enough said. Third and most important, their food is consistently excellent. I’ve eaten at other Indian restaurants around town and although there are some real gems among them I feel none can match the overall experience that Ganges consistently delivers.

Delivery service - very poor

I am a pure vegetarian and ordered food from Ganges Wudaokou and this restaurant doesn't check what they send to whom. They took more than 1 hour and then delivered someone else's chicken dish. This is ridiculously poor customer service.

Excellent food in comfortable restaurant

Two of us had dinner at Ganges Indian restaurant yesterday. If you have never been to the Place it’s more interesting that one would think. The restaurant’s décor is similar to Sanlitun’s but with mirrors on the ceiling, wacky but fun chandeliers, and a very interesting golden wall with cutouts that look as if a statue of the Buddha should be in each.

They have a new menu that is worth mentioning. South Indian food is something I know little about but found it intriguing if not tasty. The onion pancake and donut shaped pastry that we ordered came with 4 or 5 saucers of different dipping sauces. The tastes were fascinating ranging from spicy coconut to fruit jams, yogurt, and a tomato based clear soup. Of the two curries that we ordered my favorite one was the spiced lamb but the chicken curry was also very good. I especially liked that the spice in the lamb curry wasn’t overwhelmingly hot. Perhaps one of the more interesting dishes was a large thin crepe like pancake that arrived at our table rolled like a tube. The waiter cut it in half and it was still too large to fit on the plate. It comes with a yellow potato cashew mix that we spooned on top and was quite delicious. We finished the meal with masala tea.

I eaten at Ganges quite a few times but this was the first time I’ve seen “Southern Indian” food on the menu. That said, I don’t recall all of the names. The other dishes that I would recommend are the chicken tandoori, the butter chicken, palak paneer and the onion or garlic naan.

Decent Indian food

Tried the one in Sanlitun and never been to the buffet.

This Indian restaurant provide decent Indian food with a HUGE menu feathuring as well dishes from north and south indian as a good selection of vegetarian dishes. The food is good but not really exceptionnal, lets call it classic Indian. The service is okay and quite english-friendly with a "maitre d'hotel" from India always ready to provide advices if your are lost in the menu. Most dishes can be ajusted to your palate for an extra spicy or softer sensation as well if you ask. The decoration is dark velvet and quite elegant.

Really too bad they don't offer thalis on the menu and I personnaly think the big screen in the room passing Indian RNb is not really a plus for a nice classy dinner.. Another thing is the price that are quite high, but stay on the normal reach for Indian food. Count 250 something RMB for a couple of curry, samosas, side dishes and two beers.

A decent Indian restaurant.

Just OK...nothing special

We decided to check this place out since it was suggested by some friends.... so we went for the buffet lunch,
it was ok but to be honest its nothing compared to the Indian Kitchen.... there was nothing so special about the food and the service was just an ok!...if i pick between Indian Kitchen and Ganges.. i'll go for the Indian Kitchen ..... thats until they can convince me to do otherwise!!...which hopefully soon because i like the Sanlitun area better

Great food, service and dancing - what's not to love?

Last night a gaggle of us descended upon Ganges (The Place) to eat Indian. The restaurant has been remodeled since my last visit. I like the new look. The new restaurant resembles the one in Sanlitun with ornate patterns etched out of the wooden panels lining the walls and clear and purple colored chandeliers. Because of the dance performances last night was packed. Call ahead for reservations. I would have never done so but because the size of our crowd luckily this time I did.
The food is typically Indian with spicy hot curries, creamy non-spicy curries all which come vegetarian, or with lamb, chicken, or tofu. Indian food is interesting in that each meal can have super spicy dishes the effects of which can be countered by yogurt drinks or dishes. So you can have your proverbial cake and eat it too.
We started out with the veggie pakora (deep fried cone shaped dumplings with vegetables inside), sweet corn vegetable soup, palak paneer (chunks of cheese cooked in a spinach puree) and butter chicken (a non-spicy curry). Most of us stuck with the mango lassi which is one of those yogurt based drinks that is perfect for countering spice. I highly recommend the Indian tea they have although a few cups will have you up half the evening. One cup after dinner for me acts like a digestive much the same as coffee. Our entrees were lamb vindaloo (red curry), the tandori chicken, vegetable achari (spicy vegetable curry with a slight pickle taste), and Paneer Pasanda (a first for me this dish has veggies sandwiched between two slices of cheese and cooked in a spicy curry). We asked for the food to come in two ‘waves’ – first the non-spicy then the spicy in the same order as I mentioned above. Naan and two types of rice were served as well.
The food was very good with the highest praises going to the butter chicken and the paneer pasanda. My personal favorites were, and always are, the lamb vindaloo and the tandori chicken. To be frank, all of the dishes I’ve listed in this review are crowd pleasers. As with Chinese food, I recommend going with 5-6 friends so you can affordably try more of the menu.

Good value but don't expect authentic flavours.

Was at the Sanlitun branch for a pre-Potter buffet and we were underwhelmed by the limited selections of 5 hot dishes. None of the dishes were spicy - well maybe just a tiny tingle with the aloo mutter. The chicken tikka tasted microwaved and lacked any spices. At least the naan was fresh and went well with the rich korma.

At 42rmb/pax and having adapted to insipid Beijing taste buds, come here to fill up at a good price. Meanwhile, our search for authentic Indian continues.

No other restaurant can claim as much

Ganges does several things that I think separate it from the pack. First, their service is better than most. For someone that goes out quite a bit, this is a hot-button issue for me. Great service can make a good dinner great. Bad service can make a good dinner bad. No mystery there. I’ve always received great service from Ganges. Second, what they provide is not only good but consistent - across all of their locations. I know when I’m in lido for a lunch meeting that I will get the same butter chicken, naan, and mango lassi that I do at "The Place." Beijing’s restaurants are at best a crap shoot. I can rely on solid food and service when I visit Ganges. Third and lastly, Ganges is convenient. They have several locations many of which coincide with where I end up either for business or pleasure. Convenience sells. In Beijing, no other Indian restaurant can claim as much as Ganges which is why I think it’s the best Indian restaurant in the city.

The real deal

Ganges has been a longtime favorite of mine. Though I also thoroughly enjoy all of the other Indian restaurants in town that I've been to, the variety of dishes available (and since 2007 or so when their first Chaoyang District branch opened at The Place) and convenient locations mean that I end up at Ganges most often when in the mood for South Asian cuisine.

The management here is definitely committed to authenticity (all chefs at all branches hired from India), and their goal to serve a variety of dishes that represent the diversity of Indian cuisine from across the subcontinent means that this is a fabulous venue for exploratory eating. You could definitely dine as a party of four several times without repeating a dish.

Also recently discovered that if you explain to the manager carefully, their kitchen is capable of the kind of five-alarm spicy Vindaloo that I always crave and order but am seldom served.

Recent additions to their offerings include a selection of traditional Indian sweets called mithai, which I highly recommend. Several of them are milk-based squares with, rich sweet milk flavors. I particularly love the cashew fudge and the chickpea balls (not sure of the name). The idea sounded strange when I first heard about it, but they are indeed very distinctive and grew on me quickly. Not for every taste though. One out of two non-Indian friends to try with me was not able to reconcile the flavor with her palate (the other friend loved them too, and may have sampled fresher versions).
